I bought a 2008 Toyota RAV4 as a daily for work. Of course the audio system was pretty lacking and I tried to ignore it, telling myself over and over...it's just a work vehicle. The more I listened to music tooling around in it, the more the short comings showed themselves. Couldn't fight it anymore...

Started looking at head units. The Pioneer DMH-2000NEX had the feature set I wanted at a very affordable price. Picked that up off eBay refurbished for $250 shipped. Also nabbed an install kit and harness. I still wanted the steering wheel controls to work so the PAC SWI-CP2 was purchased from Amazon.

The installation went fairly well. Had to modify the mounting brackets to get the radio at the right angle to match the opening. I'd have to say it came out really clean, pretty much looking factory.

I chose the radio because it allows the front and rear powered outputs to be configured as tweeter and midbass. It also has time alignment.

My nephew just bought a 2005 Chevy regular cab. He would like a sound system in it. He is on a limited budget like most high school students.
Surprisingly, I don't have many woofers that would work well in a small sealed box. In my current stash these buyout 4x6 might be the best option.

https://www.parts-express.com/4-x-6-High-Excursion-Poly-Cone-Woofer-with-Neodymium-Magnet-299-714?quantity=1

1 cf is the max we can fit.

What are your thoughts? Is this a lost cause? Should I just buy a GRS subwoofer?

Yesterday I watched this live stream from Erin's Audio Corner. Erin mentioned that he will be using the JL Audio MAX kit for making amplifier measurements in the the future. Seems to be mainly directed at the car audio digital design market, but can also be used for home audio. Kind of pricy (US3.5k), so I don't think I will be purchasing one of these any time soon. However, I have been reviewing the videos and it looks like a very powerful and well engineered piece of gear. Really cool looking 5 microphone testing fixture. Thoughts?

I bought a Kia Soul with the Infinity audio system in it. It is not great. Surprisingly the door speakers are actually quite nice. The Tweeters in the dash are not bad. But the sub is crap.

The sub is a 7 or 8" paper driver with dual 2 ohm coils. Plastic frame, paper cone, QTS=.95, SPL=86 db, VAS=11.4 L, FS=51hz, SD=200cm2.
The output of the sub is very low.

I looked for a high efficiency dual 2 ohm Sub and found nothing. Then I wondered if I installed 4 x 4ohm woofers in the empty spare tire area if that would be better. (I really don't want to add an amp right now.) This would get the spl up. But would it sound like crap?

Anyone ever tried this before?

Found this JL Audio factory tour online tonight. I had no idea a great deal of their stuff was still made in the States. They have a 160k sq ft facility in Florida where a lot of stuff is hand made. Love or hate JL (I admittedly always was a fanboy..) I think it is respectable to hand make so much stuff here today when the trend is so big to go to Eastern manufacturing at a fraction of the cost. I am less off-put by the higher price of their products knowing this.

While not directly audio related I thought someone here may have done the same. If you have, did it make a noticeable difference? If not any guess as to if this is a waste of money or will it improve the quietness of the cabin? (Car is a 2022 Outback Premium I have CLD on the doors and spare tire well. Peerless tweeters in the dash and silver flutes in the doors. Sub is currently a sunfire Jr. With a JBL club A600 amp).

I have been wanting to add a small sub to my car since I bought it. I did some modeling last night of several of the dayton 10" subs and found some interesting things. When modeled at their RMS power ratings none get close to the rated xmax. The max-x is at 10mm with 400 watts and 110db. At the other end of the price spectrum the rss HE 10" is only using about 13mm of the 25mm spec at 800 watts. Same spl But it does get lower.

The issue with these subs is the port. I am looking at a 20 or 25L box tuned to 30 hz or lower. Seems like a good candidate for a PR. However the PRs on the market are almost as much as the max-x driver! Any suggestions for a high value PR? (The css10" at $90 looks like the best deal)

Or should I do 2 opposed subs sealed for almost the same price?

I have an old JL audio amp, e2150, from way back. I hooked it up in my car and it still works. But the car doesn't like it. If i have the high level input plugged in when turning the car on it disables the speakers and tells to take the car in for service. Once it completes its check I can plug the input in and everything works fine. I have a 2022 outback with a base audio system.

I have posted this issue on several car audio forums where the overwhelming response is that I need load resistors. However my understanding is that load resistors are for when you remove the speakers to load the amp.

I am adding the amp's high-level inputs in parallel with the speakers. This is adding a 5k ohm load in parallel with the speakers. I don't see how load resistors can be added.

I think that the amp is causing some sort of distortion that the hu is detecting.

I have a new 2022 Outback. The speakers are harsh. I asked about upgrading in a sound quality forum on FB. Was told that I needed a DSP before I did anything. Now I am sure this would make a big difference but I dont want to get that involved right now. So I did my own thing. I measured the car and did a distortion sweep. High (2 to 3%) distortion at 2 to 4khz. The single cap was not bringing the level down enough on the tweeter. I pulled the tweeters in the dash, a $1 1/2" mylar special, and replaced them with a Vifa BC25 I had on hand. Much better sound. I used a 2nd order crossover with a resister to bring the level down. I still think that there is something not right about the system. But measuring in a car is not easy!

I bought this car a couple years ago and it had a blown LF door speaker. This had to be addressed, so I removed the door panel and weighed my options. I had the 6" Dyna's and they would have been a drop in replacement. I also had the 8"ers, too. Lucky for me these doors excepted them lovingly. The car came with a double DIN Kenwood radio which isn't to bad, so that'll work fine for now.
The time has come for awesome sound to be completed. Last weekend I removed the passenger seat and rear seat/panels to get the ball rolling. I ran the power wire. This weekend marked the last day for the weak ass rear speakers. Now another set of 8's reside back there. Next up is the possibility of BG neo8's in the kick panels.

I'm pretty heavy in to the car audio 'scene'; competing and going to various events. As most of you can imagine, in car audio usually the subwoofer is in the trunk area. Because of this, many tend to cross their door-mounted or kickpanel mounted midbass lower (usually 60hz or so) in order to keep the subwoofer from playing too high and get the bass "up front". I made a video recently discussing this and why, though it may seem logical, it actually results in worse performance in regards to the 'bass up front' illusion and how/why you can use your subwoofer to improve midbass performance.

This isn’t truly a shocking revelation. Plenty of people already do what I suggest. It just goes against intuition and against some beliefs in the car audio community that a subwoofer should not play too high in frequency because it can cause the bass to be localized behind you.

The reason why is due to one MAJOR issue in car audio: the “Nearside Null”. This is the large dip in response of the driver’s side midbass speaker that occurs typically in the 70-90hz region. This doesn't occur in every car; there are certainly exceptions to the more extreme car installs.

It is an acoustical null caused by the relationship of the listener’s location relative to the midbass location and generally caused by the width of the vehicle. If you play a track with bass guitar it’s very prevalent; you get a localization to the nearside midbass speaker when the midbass speaker is crossed lower than the frequency where the null occurs.

Generally speaking, the lower your crossover point between midbass and subwoofer, the more noticeable this occurrence is. Unfortunately, this isn’t something you can simply “EQ out”, either. Throwing +6dB at this null may only result in 1dB of actual gain; that means you’re wasting a LOT of power and risking damage to your speaker for no acoustical gain. Some of you may even think to yourselves “seems like you’re not getting much by crossing the midbass low. Maybe there’s not as much benefit as I thought in doing that”. That’s a logical assumption and a lot of times that’s actually true. Crossing the midbass too low can actually result in more “bass behind you”! And you can also take some of the strain off your midbass by crossing them at or above the null. Ironically, we in car audio tend to cross midbass low to get the “up front” bass we so much desire. BUT, IN FACT, the majority of the time you have bass that pulls to the rear is BECAUSE of the midbass nulls. I know that sounds counteractive. But it’s the truth. Standing waves are problematic and this is one symptom of them; whether in home or car audio.

Contrary to popular belief, raising the subwoofer crossover in to the region that this null occurs can actually HELP the sound to stay focused and achieve “up front” bass. If you can move your subwoofer to a location where it is null-free through a frequency above the Nearside Null then you can likely improve midbass without negatively impacting the “up front bass” effect that so many are after. And you can also take some of the strain off your midbass by crossing them at or above the null frequency. Not all have the luxury of space to move the subwoofer around much but experimentation is key here; you may be surprised at the difference subwoofer placement in the trunk can make.

And one important conclusion here is that placing the rear mounted subwoofer on the opposite side of the listening position often results in better response!

So I'm really itching to start collecting drivers for my vehicle and have decided on the mid, Scanspeak 10f/8414g, I've already got the substage completed, Aura MR.18.

My next task is deciding on a 6" - 8" woofer, which will go underseat (stock location) and has a VERY difficult constraint on that it needs to be about 3" in depth. I haven't actually pulled the seat to see how much more room I can pull out of it, but have seen guys go 3", and maybe I can go 3.5", but the less work in modifying the better. I'm trying to go 8" but if a 6" fits the bill entirely I wouldn't be against it.

Current options in order of first blush belief of concept:

1. Morel MW-266 /known to work well, shallow solid performer
2. Morel H8.1 / shallow, step-up, bit pricey, works better in the space provided
3. Wavecor WF166TU02 / 6.5", great sensitivity, almost perfect for airspace and natural rolloff, shallow
4. Dayton Esoteric 7"
5. SB Acoustics 8" woofers / whole bunch that I like, sensitive! , pushing the issue of depth, have always wanted to use SB drivers
6. Scanspeak 22W/4534G00 / stick with same line, great power handling and sensitivity, depth is iffy, great match for where I'll probably cross and airspace to do it

I feel like I'm probably splitting hairs here but figured I'd get some suggestions so as to not miss something that a novice like I will likely do, and I know a great deal of you guys have experience with or close to these drivers. I'm open to other ideas as well.

Oh! Woofer goes under front seats, the mid is in the door panel level with the dash and if you guys don't mind was gonna talk tweeter after this, which will be in the sail.

Thanks!

I usually have between zero and one percent luck posting pics that are the right size and rotated properly, so apologies ahead of time if they are giant or sideways..

Anywho, my wife and I recently picked up a 1968 Camaro. It was "done" by the guy before me. Overall its an okay car. It is nothing crazy; It was badged as a Z28 by the last owner but is originally a six banger sport coupe. It has a budget 383 choked off by some smog-era iron heads. The body is relatively solid, I'm sure with plenty of glass under the paint. The paint is pretty clean, with some bubbles. It is supposed to be sunset orange metallic, looks coppertone in some lights. It looks, runs, and drives pretty decent. My personal long term goals are to lose the 15" Cragars, drop it a couple inches, put some decent heads on it, upgrade the suspension, and go for a pro touring look.

The car came with a circa 2000 Pioneer CD deck and sweet pair of Kenwood dual cone 6x9s. I like those older Pioneer decks, but this one was all messed up, with the preouts cut off and antenna wire pinched almost all the way through. I pulled the deck and found a nice gouged hole behind all the mystery glue holding the radio in. Being that this was the situation, I had thousands of dollars in old car audio gear in the garage attic, and I want to go pro touring look anyway, I figured I'd do a custom install. I plan to try to blend it in with the car's interior the best I can without hacking the car. I'll try to keep up with progress pics.
