I bought this a couple of months before I logged into MAC/DIY and have some thoughts. Sadly, the price has gone up over 700.00 from when I purchased. I was originally targeting the NAD C 3050 BluOS-D as it was 1K cheaper than the C.399. It went on backorder forever. It's price has also risen 700.00 (probably Tariff-related). Looks lovely, just like my old Fisher in my room when I was a high-schooler!

https://www.crutchfield.com/p_745C399BLD/NAD-C-399-BluOS-D.html

I looked at a lot of reviews of NAD products. One of the biggest grumps was that "their equipment lines all sound the same." In other words, if you listen to a C.399 vs one of their $5K "Master Class" amps, the sound is the same. With the more expensive amp, you get more power, a more sturdy chassis, and more features but the same SQ. That is a silly complaint. That's called VALUE! If you have adequate power and features, no upgrades required or desired. All of the reviews including Stereophile and TAS are top-level.

This Integrated amp is one of the first rack products I've heard that actually, significantly sounds better than another one. It utterly kicks my Denon AVR's butt in detail, and more importantly, in coloration. My Denon AVR has a very warm sound (even in Pure Direct) that will grab your attention when you first listen to it. To be fair, in constant year dollars, it cost 2x what the Denon did.
It is the best and most uncolored solid state amp I have ever owned. And it's Digital (shock). I expected to not like it and return it because of the Digital amp - not so. You can't tell.

Add Blu-OS(D) with a high-res account from Tidal or Qobuz. I have the amp connected hardline to my router and the SQ is just great. And, the back of the amp has card slots for expansion/upgrades. Geez - I am using my old Cambridge Azur 840c as a transport via SP/DIF but it doesn't get much use anymore with full-res Tidal. Occasional comparison or old recording not available.
Blu-OS can occasionally be cranky on the Tablet I use to operate the Amp. Software, go figure.

My only complaint with this amplifier is Speaker Selection. Since we all listen to multiple speaks, an A/B/A+B switch is expected. Apparently, NAD thought that someone would buy this integrated amp with Blu-OS, an awesome DAC, and a pre-amp and bridge it, so the speaker outputs are A and A+B only. Oops. I've never seen anyone bridge an integrated amp - just dedicated amps. Feedback delivered.

**5 stars on SQ vs cost.
3 stars on features due to the Speaker A and A+B only.
4 stars on the Blu-OS(D) software. It would be 5 if it behaved 100% of the time.
**

If you are a looking, you should audition one. Wendy's (SO) comment was the best: "that requires no adjustment." She never comments on gear.

Cheers / Robert

This ^ thing is so flat, clean and wide with no annoying peaks or dips.
I just got around to clamping it upon the top of my little towers (naked - no baffle) in place of the also awesome HiVi RT1.3 Isodynamic tweets.

It is a drop in replacement that is so smooth and has no peaks anywhere while listening to the same test tracks.
The HiVi unit has a pronounced but delightful response but this Fountek unit just sounds more natural.

Highly recommended.

Erin (Erin's Audio Corner) just posted this speaker review (AsciLab C6B) in which he talked about how a somewhat narrowing directivity with frequency can affect stereo imaging. If the directivity is not constant, musical instruments or voices will appear to be in two places at the same time. This, in turn, will confuse the listener because it does not sound natural. What are your thoughts on this concept?

And would it be possible for the average DIY'er to build something similar to this? My thinking is that you would need a small diameter tweeter (maybe 1/2" to 3/4" or so) placed on a very shallow waveguide and then cross to a somewhat small 5" diameter mid-bass. If you wanted deep bass, a subwoofer would be necessary.

I'm in the process of moving my first line gear down to my listening room. This means replacing the equipment upstairs so that we have something to which to listen there.

We've been using a Bluesound Node for streaming. So, I added a Bluesound Powernode Edge as an all-in-one up stairs. I must say, it is great at what it does. Streams all major services and amplifies really well for a relatively modestly powered device. (Also a digital and analog in, HDMIarc and sub out).

Totally silent without a signal, regardless of volume setting. Clean, smooth midrange, sweet highs and solid bass. Does not quite control the bottom like my Arcam SA20, but it is not distracting.

If you have such a need, I recommend it at $649.

I have all of the official releases and some bootlegs, but the 1971 Albert Hall concert included in this new release is just sensational in performance and sound. I had thought 'Rock of Ages' to be a great live show(s) but this one is arguably even better. A different set list, too, which makes for a new experience.

So sad that most of the group are no longer with us, but what a legacy:

Hey all, I picked up a few of the new SB Audience drivers. SB Audience is the new pro-targeted line by SB Acoustics. Given how new they are, I figured they may be of interest here.

I'll be sharing my impressions in this thread, and eventually building a 2-way (it will need subwoofer support). I have the below in my possession. Feel free to hit me up with any questions (or suggestions), and I will do my best to answer them.

1) NERO-12MWN400D
2) ROSSO-65CDN-T
3) ROSSO-65CD-T
4) SB Audience H-280 Horn (60° Horizontal x 40° Vertical)

I also have the 18sound XT1464 that I will be testing. It has a similar coverage for a 1.4" (60° Horizontal x 50° Vertical), but the 18sound utilizes a smooth elliptical shape. This also results in the horn being considerably larger, and also more expensive.

http://www.sbaudience.com/
https://audioxpress.com/article/from-indonesia-to-the-global-market-sb-acoustics-introduces-new-brands
https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/sb-audience-pro-sound/

After the hiccups I had with REW yesterday, I finally got it working. Below are 2 measurements for the Rosso-65CD-T (non-neo) in the H-280 horn.

Both of the Compression drivers have annular titanium diaphragms and copper caps. The main difference I can see is the neo vs ferrite motor, and the [large] weight savings.

Measurements below were taken dead on, and at 1 meter.

I splurged and bought some of the gloss faux wood Di-Noc. Wow this stuff is nice! Stay tuned for some photos to be posted this evening.

In Canada the stuff is real hard to find apart from the carbon fibre (you can of course order from the US at a huge shipping cost), but I found a local print shop that could order the wood grain Di-Noc. The normal stuff is only mediocre looking, but any of the gloss products really pop. They have a shimmer and depth to them that no other faux wood product I've seen even comes close.

The bad part is the price, it can actually be more expensive than real wood veneer, however the reason to pay the extra price for it is the ease of installation. No sand, stain, fill, finish, sand, finish, sand, finish, sand, polish, etc. Just peel and stick and enjoy. In Canada it is sold by the meter, and is a 4ft width, so the stuff I bought was CAD$80 per meter.

Has anyone here used Di-Noc, wood grain or the normal carbon fibre stuff? Feel free to share your thoughts and photos.

Yep, you read that right - a teardown/build quality review of the infamous Bose 201.

To start with, the cabinets are 1/2" particle board. Vinyl wrapped. No bracing. Plastic slot port. Paper cone "tweeter". Untreated paper cone woofer with a treated foam surround. The suspension is very stiff on the woofer, but it does have an attractive trim ring. The woofer otherwise has a very old school look to it. The terminals are solderless wire-wrapped type - a fairly legitimate method for terminating. The internal wiring appears to be 24awg solid core, and the crossover consists of a single capacitor. There is what appears to be about 4-5oz of stuffing, actually fairly high quality material. Some type of resistive element in the "crossover" - not sure if it is a protection device or what. I really don't give a shit, either. These are seriously shitass quality speakers.

Pushing on the woofer cone introduces wrinkling in the surround almost immediately. Not a good sign for linearity, but probably moot if these are used in some kind of 5.1 system where the receiver will make sure this do not see much bass action.

Woofer parameters are:

Fs = 81.03 Hz

Re = 5.83 ohms[dc]

Le = 445.56 uH

L2 = 1467.20 uH

R2 = 41.05 ohms

Qt = 0.45

Qes = 0.49

Qms = 5.85

Mms = 14.51 grams

Rms = 1.263177 kg/s

Cms = 0.000266 m/N

Vas = 7.43 liters

Sd= 141.03 cm^2

Bl = 9.373125 Tm

ETA = 0.77 %

Lp(2.83V/1m) = 92.37 dB

Added Mass Method:

Added mass = 30.00 grams

Diameter= 13.40 cm

Woofer impedance curve:

There we see it has a respectable Qts and a low compliance - and is very sensitive for a 6.5" driver. Hoffman is in the mix here, though, as the small vented box does not yield any extension. Some wrinkles around 700Hz leads me to believe the response is not very linear. In fact, there are wrinkles all the way from 700 up to 8K if you look.

I estimate the usable interior of the cabinet at around 8.5 liters. It appears to be tuned to around 70Hz, and the system impedance is fairly benign:

If going by the approximate 70Hz tuning, this is the modeled response:

So far it lives up to the "no lows" reputation. Pay no attention to the Rival header, nothing to see here. I'm remarkably lazy, to be honest.

I'll put some response measurements up later. I might even do some listening.

This time the occupied 3 floors in Park Lane Hotel, next to Plaza hotel with a gorgeous overview of Central Park.
The good news is, the show was crowded. And I mean, you had to stand in line to get to some rooms.
Even better news, not only old people were present but also middle-aged and hear this, woman as well! So, NY NY is a surprise.
Rooms were fairly small and no humongous speakers were shown. I think I am going to match them up to either a pair of Zaph 5" or maybe another pair of Audible Physics 4". Anyway, I will try to take FR tomorrow. The impedance profile looks pretty good. I was not expecting the under 3ohm impedance though.
Picked up a set on Ama.
Why Bluetooth and why ANC? I spend many hours in the shop in a fairly noisy environment. CNC router can run for hours every day, exhaust fans, table saw. Anyway, this mechanical conundrum makes listening to anything but the tools rather problematic. Friend of mine let me try Momentum 2.0 which I found to be quite good but out of my price range. So, settled for a less expensive (under $200) HD 4.5 BTNC.
The set allows me to listen to anything from history lecture to the Spanish lesson while I am running CNC or a sander.
The range with inexpensive Bluetooth USB transmitter is around 15ft. Not a lot so I added Avantree Oasis.
The range now is close to a 100ft which is more than enough for me. I am not sure if aptX makes a difference for just listening but the quality is good enough.
I have not EQed the sound to my liking nor have I measured the FR of the set.
ANC is very good. CNC, ripping through MDS sounds like a muffled noise. Table saw sounds like a table-fan.
One added benefit is that the set has a build in mic. It is paired with my smartphone so if the call comes in, I can respond without even picking it up, right from the headset.

OK, these guys arrive yesterday and I had some time this morning before work to take a look. For starters, the cone is very attractive. The dustcap is aluminum - which I was pleasantly surprised at. I was expecting the same cheap looking treated fabric style that appears on the DA series. Minimal glue squeeze out between dustcap and cone, too.

The motor is large, but... the only voice coil venting is the vent out the backside. It is about 12mm in diameter, and while I would like to see a roundover on the vent (along with under dustcap or underspider venting) it is what it is.

One serious drawback to this driver is the frame. It is extremely flimsy - that cardboard gasket they provide under the mounting lip isn't meant to do us any favors as a sealing agent - it keeps screws from destroying the cheapass frame. It is ~0.8mm thickness. In constrast to that, a buyout 4" I have sitting on the desk (because I like how it looks with it's old fashioned dimpled poly cone and greenish looking surround) is 1.0mm. And sorry, Dayton - i know it will be buried in a cabinet, but the orange peeled finish on the frame along with an obvious touch-up job just further drives home how cheap these frames really are. I mean, these frames are cheaper than a buyout driver from Orevox that used to retail on their website for $14/pr./Rant

Since there is no way to peer at the motor internals without wrecking it, I cannot say for sure what type of shorting ring it is - is it copper? Is it aluminum? Is it even effective one iota? Impedance curves imply it has minimal effect.

Sample 1:

Thiele-Small parameters:

Fs = 39.47 Hz

Re = 5.45 ohms[dc]

Le = 193.29 uH

L2 = 497.67 uH

R2 = 12.29 ohms

Qt = 0.31

Qes = 0.38

Qms = 1.69

Mms = 21.07 grams

Rms = 3.082220 kg/s

Cms = 0.000772 m/N

Vas = 17.95 liters

Sd= 128.68 cm^2

Bl = 8.605253 Tm

ETA = 0.28 %

Lp(2.83V/1m) = 88.18 dB

Added Mass Method:

Added mass = 20.00 grams

Diameter= 12.80 cm

Sample 2:

Thiele-Small parameters:

Fs = 41.63 Hz

Re = 5.48 ohms[dc]

Le = 198.87 uH

L2 = 503.78 uH

R2 = 12.55 ohms

Qt = 0.29

Qes = 0.36

Qms = 1.59

Mms = 16.73 grams

Rms = 2.754248 kg/s

Cms = 0.000874 m/N

Vas = 20.32 liters

Sd= 128.68 cm^2

Bl = 8.173118 Tm

ETA = 0.39 %

Lp(2.83V/1m) = 89.69 dB

Added Mass Method:

Added mass = 20.00 grams

Diameter= 12.80 cm

Decent enough unit-to-unit, although I have seen better from Dayton in the past.

Of greater concern to me is the blip in the impedance on Sample2:

That implies a significant difference in break-up behavior unit-to-unit. I am very curious to see Craig and Ron's impedance sweeps - maybe one of mine is an outlier. They are marked, so when I take some in-box I will post the corresponding FR curves. This could be a deal breaker for me, we'll see.

I am liking these in my 0.38 cabinets, tuned to high 40's or so. Should be bassy enough for music.

So anyways, here ends this review for now. Based on build quality and unit-to-unit, so far I am rating these a solid "C".

There will be a lot more discussion on my part and some measurements (loopback mostly) of this "highly regarded' usb sound card. I picked it up because I need a low noise floor DAC/ADC for equipment testing and it seems to have that. On the other hand I just tested it out with headphones and it sounds like lame garbage. I'm assuming that is the amplifier used for the headphone out, since the Cirrus Logic CS4398 has found its way into many high-end devices (Marantz CD players for instance), a 120db SNR 32-bit DAC. Right now I'd rank it like so of the headphone devices I have here:

1) Fiio X1 (PCM1492 DAC)
2) Lumia 640 LTE phone (unknown DAC)
3) Xonar U7

I'll report more after more testing.
