HiVi DM-7500 and DSP . . .

  • This ^ is very interesting to me.

Thanks for finding and posting this example - it would also be interesting to see how other driver types fare in this regard.

I FINALLY got off my ass and modified the mini towers last night to install the DM7500's.

after just a few tweaks to the DSP/XO's and standing mid field in the sweet listening triangle these things are nothing short of amazing.

That airy/breathy ambience that only a dome can bring is now added at lower frequencies making piano and vocals sound much more intimate like actually having them there in the room with me.

I left them to break-in @300Hz last night and probably move those speakers to my drum room today for mid-field monitors.

One note - Still need a woofer to reach/play to about 800 ~ 1KHz in order to give the combo depth as the DM7500 lacks the piston-punch of a cone but the SB20PFC's are doing that just fine . . .

  • Added:

My only complaint with the DM7500 is that the soldering work in attaching the voice coil wires to the spade terminals was a bit thick as I was unable to utilize standard 1/4" Sta-Con crimp connectors and had to solder pigtails to those terminals - not a show stopper.

  • Looks like the MiniDSP 4X10 is TU after trying to get it going tonight - worked for a few minutes then stopped output on the mini towers so I got fed-up with it and pulled it and the amps from service - now choking on dust/ cleaning and reconfiguring the drum recording rack with a newer system - going to try this new Acoustas DSP amp 1st and see how it performs now that I have a Windows UI for it fresh in my hands . . .

  • Hey Eric - that Acoustas DSP amp is a spectacular performing piece of gear for mixing/mastering amp.
Perfectly quiet with USB and COAX audio input with no discernable distortion even at full volume.

I'll be purchasing more of them.

  • Looks like a nice piece, but is a bit light on overall power.

  • Not for my needs but for rocking-out it isn't suitable - agreed.

It's absolutely perfect for my studio as a reference monitoring system - I can't play so loud that I ruin my hearing for the evenings . . .

  • Having acquired a pair of these domes, I plan on using them with some NeoCD3.5H and RS270-8 in some old DLK cabs (still need to source). The voicecoils on the domes will be much further forward than the other drivers so I thought a small waveguide might work well. I designed these waveguides with the Ath4 software, added flanges in CAD, and printed one out today. I did some very basic measurements just to see what impact the waveguide would have. I had a 68uF in series with the domes.

  • Sweet!

I'm running the DM7500's flush on baffle with the HiVi RT1.3WE and SB20PFC30-4 (NLA) in my mini towers and they sound fantastic. Had to plug the 3" ports for use in my studio room - too much bass - sound better sealed 1 cu ft.

Looking forward to your design outcome.

I messed up the colors in the graphs. For the on axis graph, the WG is the blue line. For the off axis graph, the WG is the black line.

  • Initial baffle idea based on DLK 1 1/2 dimensions. It's a tight fit.
