I guess Im missing something here , what makes this a 172.00 dollar driver? Is it the Neo motor? Steel chassis , which is no big deal in my mind?

Morel QC isn't great. Have a close look at the cone image here, the bottom of the dust cap, there is damage:

My friend bought a pair, both damaged in the same location, like someone dropped a chisel on the cone.

When people say "this driver competes with drivers at 2-3x the price" it's the low end Morels they are referring to. Only Morel's top end drivers are worth looking at, and even then the value isn't great.

Very few designs with Morel woofers. I like the few Morel tweeters I've heard. The dome mids sound great to my ears, but their woofers don't seem to offer anything to justify the price tag. Eton is another one that baffles me. I was absent for a few years, but I've never run across a DIY design that uses an Eton driver. I love the look of their Orchestra woofers, but nobody seems to have any experience using them.

Nick and I did one using an Eton woofer a couple years ago, details are on the forum. Mr. Schmidt's he called them.

I had their 9in CAW 938 (LP 380 or so) that I was very happy with and had no issues. Cast frame with 3 inch voice coil.

I don't see damage on the TSCM634 linked. I have the TSCW636 in my Cecropia Supreme towers, and they are marvelous. The CAW634 were not as clean as the former, and hence the upgrade. I've also used the old MW168, and liked them a lot. I agree the M and T models are very good.

The Etons are few and far between it seems. One year Todd shipped in his Corellias with the DXT and the 5" Eton, and those sounded great! I've heard the larger 11"/12" Eton standard range once at an event, the Symphony series maybe twice, the Arcosia 5" I heard in a Salk speaker at AXPONA, and the Orchestra line is not really old enough to really have been applied a lot yet. The new Orchestra series is the only one with phase plugs available from Mad anymore, so maybe the Symphony is losing its place in their lineup a bit. I've wanted to hear the AMT and their Ceramic domes, but have not yet. The older 22 and 25 mm textiles I've heard and were nothing special.

I saw that, but I don't think it's damaged. The Rohacell on the Morels is heavily clear-coated with a polymer, and is also highly reflective. It might not be more than a reflection you are seeing.

I’ve always wanted to play with an eton driver. I’d like to try this https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/approx-8-woofers/eton-orchestra-8-612-8-paper-cone-black/ with a big corundum or satori tweeter in a higher end two-way. Too many projects now though.

Those orchestra drivers look cool - as does the $650 arcosia one 😜
