Stupid top side gasket

These woofers with the gasket on the top of the frame for backside mounting, why do they have the gap between each piece?? I just finished mounting a subwoofer on the inside and I can hear the air passing through this gasket. Ugh. Now I need to pull apart and fill.....

So yes, need to pull and fill to seal. Why even use it? Don't understand how you can get away with that....
