MCM 55-5670 8in. 2way?

I've been meaning to do an 8in 2way, maybe even MTM for a while and was looking at the usual suspects like RS225 and SB23 when I came across mention of the MCM 55-5670 8in Kevlar/Paper woofers. Some folks seems to think highly of them and the price is right. Can't find any FR measurements other than factory pdf.

Can they be crossed high enough for a 2way? Anyone have the distortion profile/FR?

I have used the MCM 55-5670 in several projects and think they are a fantastic performing woofer. Bonus they are priced great. That said I consider them a woofer but not a midbass driver, not a driver suitable for a two way speaker with a conventional dome tweeter. They perform excellent as a pure woofer up to about 800-900 Hz. They are a perfect driver for a 3 way design. That has been my personal experience with them, YMMV.

  • I'm no help on this one, but welcome to the forum. What tweeter are you planning to use?

  • I've got SB29RDC and Satori TW29R tweeters, so crossing over low shouldn't be a problem. Thanks.

For an 8" two way MTM I'd probably go with the Peerless 830869 nomex woofers. More money yes, but sound great crossed as high as 1500 Hz.

  • Hi Wolf. Yep!

Thanks for the quick responses, everyone. I could swear driver prices have been going up the past few weeks so thought I'd get some input on the MCMs.

I can't vouch for their suitability in a two-way, but I do have a couple of them sitting here NIB that I can be convinced to sell at a discount over what Newark currently has them at.

    I have a signature.
  • This is my measurement of FF merged with nearfield with port in 1 cu. ft. with a port tuned to 42Hz. It measures pretty well for a 2 way but I don't know how it would sound since I crossed at 1Khz for a 3 way. The owner loves them.

There's a PDF of the build in this post. https://diy.midwestaudio.club/discussion/comment/28026

Thanks Ron. That doesn't look quite so bad...

  • I got to thinking about my graph and decided I didn't know under what conditions it was measured and it looked too flat to be the raw measurement. I pulled up the original driver file and it looks more like what I would expect.

Thanks. Is this farfield no bsc? Response is much smoother than I expected.

  • It's gated 1M FF merged with NF summed with port with simulated baffle step added. I looks like it was merged @ 400Hz. It's essentially the response of the woofer in the box without room effects.

  • Based on Ron's posted FR I don't see a reason it couldn't be crossed to the right tweeter.

  • Yes, looks promising. Looking at that rising response makes me wonder if the sensitivity is as claimed though.

  • Use two in parallel (MTM) =)
