What do you think of this SB34NRX75-16 open baffle woofer?

edited November 2022 in DIY

So, I know very little about open baffle woofers but have been trying to learn for the last few weeks. This woofer is intended for open baffle use - low Fs, high Qts and pretty high sensitivity (86db but at 16ohms clearly intended to be used in pairs). I don't find much on the typical forums so I don't expect anyone has actually heard one, but based on T/S parameters, frd and zma do you think this is a particulalry good driver for open baffle? Good but not worth the price? Or nothing special anyways? Any comments/opinions appreciated!

  • Not worth the price compared to some car audio woofers.

  • I used a pair of Beyma 12BR70s ($155 each @US Speaker) in an open back design and was quite happy with the results https://usspeaker.com/beyma 12BR70-1.htm

  • You might also look at the SB Audience open baffle woofers. The 15 looks great on paper -

  • Not worth the price. All the above mentioned are on point.

  • I think I'd go with the SB Audience 15" that Tom linked. If your room is a smaller to normal sized listening room I think one 15" per side should be quite nice. For reference the listening room at DIY Iowa is 3 times larger than what I consider normal. If your room is substantially larger you may need a pair per side. Since their Qts isn't very high I think active XO and EQ is your friend.

  • A good comparison is SD times xmax. High qts helps with the roll off for passive alignments. You can plug the SD and xmax into Linkwitz spl_max.xls to do comparisons. Hot set up imo is 6 of these per side https://www.parts-express.com/GRS-15PF-8-15-Paper-Cone-Foam-Surround-Woofer-292-415?quantity=1

But I'm shooting for 100 dB at 30 Hz B)

  • Thanks for all the input everyone. I won't try to design an OB speaker until late 2023/24 so will read up on a lot and have time to figure out a driver. [ @PWRRYD - yeah, you knew I was thinking of OB because of those sweet speakers of Hifiside's in Iowa.) The reason I asked about the SB34's is that there is a quad of them on eBay for $295 a pair which is about 40% off and $147.50 a piece. If the response was that they looked great, although maybe pricey, then I'd consider jumping on the deal.

That definitely makes them a better choice, at that price. Still, no replacement for displacement.

  • What are some car audio woofers with good amounts of Vd and higher Qts suited for sealed enclosures or OB?

    GRS 12SW-4

    29.6 Hz Fs
    0.98 Qts
    8.5 mm xmax
    $33.23/each (Qty 4)

Two per side in an H frame could yield some nice OB bass if the room isn't huge.

  • (mini hijack)

I picked up 4x Celestion 15"s for cheap a while ago:
    Fs - 50.4hz
    Qts - .57
    Xmax - 3.5mm

Thinking of using them with some W8-2145s to try out OB.
low xmax.. Any chance this might work ok in a small room with 2x per side?
By that point I might be dabbling with a minidsp hd anyway.

  • Most car audio subs are low Q, which lend themselves to active setups where you can EQ the crap out of them. As a bonus, they're usually built to take a beating.
