It seems it emulates a round cone/horn dispersion pattern so why not stick with them?

This kind of stuff is quite over my head too. I could theorize, but it is probably wrong anyway. So I'd rather someone more knowledgeable answer.

Looks similar to newer JBL designs, except they do even number of lobes rather than odd number.
