Getting the itch for horns again. Doing some mixing and matching of drivers and horns in my stockpile to see what might be interesting. Sofar I'm thinking a 2-way in Klipsch kg4 style.. Horn tweeter with a pair of 8" woofers.
Tweeter: Selenium D220Ti (most likely) on a PE B-52 buyout horn (PHRN-15) 12.5x6". At only 4.25" deep for a screw-on horn it is pretty shallow; so more like waveguide territory. Will need to see how the driver works with it though. If I can cross down ~1.2khz I'd be very happy.

Woofers: I've got 4x Peerless 830869. From what I hear they should be up to the task. I also hear they do best in smaller vented enclosures (~.7cf ea vented).

So the idea is to have them in an enclosure 14" wide, which is just wide enough for the horn to be surrounded by the .75" side and top. It would be elevated off the baffle by .5" material so the woofers can have a .5" grill that is recessed flush with the sides. Maybe have it supported by some mid century modern style legs.

Thats interesting , I wasnt familiar with the Klipsch model.
Awesome! Another tribute build. Love it.
The d220ti will be pulled from a previous build. That build needed a crossover redesign anyway and I decided to try swapping for a Dayton compression driver so it could be entered in sdc dayton category someday.
Though, what i learned from that build was the d220ti having 109db/1w is pretty insane. It required a ton of padding and becomes so sensitive to small changes that i used an L-pad pot with it. The d202ti probably would be a better bet since it uses the same diaphragm but a smaller magnet for 106db/1w. Less weight for the horn to hold up too. Seems sometimes sensitivity can be too much of a good thing.
I really like the D202ti in my coaxials . . .
Those horns do look a bit shallow for a typical compression driver/horn. But I'm no expert having never designed a project with a CD/horn. Might work great!
Excessive force:
Stupid me, I've grown used to drivers 20-30db/1w below this.. I had the thing sitting on my thigh when I ran the test. Ears still ringing.
Ugh, It's never pretty looking at CD impedance (atleast in my price range). I need to pull the other to verify it is in the ballpark.
I've had to clean the gap out on several new Selenium D220Ti to get them to match
What was in the gaps? Hopefully just glue residue or dirt and not metal.
I remember when I was testing these in the original build I had to replace one of the diaphragms. It the coil/former was out of round. I could only detect it as a bit of injected distortion on certain notes. Due to that I'm pretty sure I inspected both rather closely at the time.
I did have the horn screwed on for the test. I don't know if the horn itself ringing, due to not being mounted to a baffle, could have much effect on it.
Combination of dirt and metal. I had to use tape to get the metal out, not easy.
Well, looks like ESS just dropped a bomb on this project for the moment. The woofers will probably be pressed into service for Heils.
I still like this project idea, but might be on the lookout for higher sensitivity woofers that can stand up to the CDs a bit better. While still being somewhat frugal (thats the challenge). Initial thoughts were GRS 8PT-8s. Though, I might pull a pair of Dayton PA200s from a previous build. And 2x more of those vs 4x of the GRS is a wash on price. I like the meaty tone of the Daytons better.
With high sensitivity woofers, those ESS tweeters will really shine.
I keep meeting people here who want high sensitivity speakers, but they don't have any budget.. Sad.
I have been looking at the SB20PFCR30 for a future project. I don't know what sensitivity range you're targeting, but those look to be near the top of range until you get into pro-audio drivers.
^ 92.5 DB and dig deep and clean in 1 cu ft w/ 3" x 5" round-flared-port too . . .
4ohm are rated 92.5db, 8ohm are 90.5db. 'Not gonna to parallel wire 4ohm woofers.
830869 are 89-90ish 8ohm. 2 per side I figured would be OK with the Heil. Keeping the spacing tight, might pull off simple 2-way like I was planning for the above idea.
If I didn't hate driving so much it would be fun to haul my soon to be started Heil/dual 8" build to play next to yours at Indy. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
If i didnt hate taking over the living room to measure i might have something to bring. I think i've reached my limit on crossover complication/part count. Been putting off completing this all peerless 3way and it has been a road block ever since. The 1.5way was an exception since it was so simple. Gona try to stay away from 3ways for now unless i think i can keep it simple.
Maybe I'm being a bit rash jumping on the 8" Heil bandwagon. I have other options such as PM180 + a powered bassbin idea. I was worried about having difficulty crossing the stock PM180 to a typical dome anyway due to it's wonky response.
'Got some thinkin to do.
