Getting the itch for horns again. Doing some mixing and matching of drivers and horns in my stockpile to see what might be interesting. Sofar I'm thinking a 2-way in Klipsch kg4 style.. Horn tweeter with a pair of 8" woofers.
Tweeter: Selenium D220Ti (most likely) on a PE B-52 buyout horn (PHRN-15) 12.5x6". At only 4.25" deep for a screw-on horn it is pretty shallow; so more like waveguide territory. Will need to see how the driver works with it though. If I can cross down ~1.2khz I'd be very happy.

Woofers: I've got 4x Peerless 830869. From what I hear they should be up to the task. I also hear they do best in smaller vented enclosures (~.7cf ea vented).

So the idea is to have them in an enclosure 14" wide, which is just wide enough for the horn to be surrounded by the .75" side and top. It would be elevated off the baffle by .5" material so the woofers can have a .5" grill that is recessed flush with the sides. Maybe have it supported by some mid century modern style legs.

Thats interesting , I wasnt familiar with the Klipsch model.
Awesome! Another tribute build. Love it.
The d220ti will be pulled from a previous build. That build needed a crossover redesign anyway and I decided to try swapping for a Dayton compression driver so it could be entered in sdc dayton category someday.
Though, what i learned from that build was the d220ti having 109db/1w is pretty insane. It required a ton of padding and becomes so sensitive to small changes that i used an L-pad pot with it. The d202ti probably would be a better bet since it uses the same diaphragm but a smaller magnet for 106db/1w. Less weight for the horn to hold up too. Seems sometimes sensitivity can be too much of a good thing.
I really like the D202ti in my coaxials . . .
Those horns do look a bit shallow for a typical compression driver/horn. But I'm no expert having never designed a project with a CD/horn. Might work great!
Excessive force:
Stupid me, I've grown used to drivers 20-30db/1w below this.. I had the thing sitting on my thigh when I ran the test. Ears still ringing.
Ugh, It's never pretty looking at CD impedance (atleast in my price range). I need to pull the other to verify it is in the ballpark.
I've had to clean the gap out on several new Selenium D220Ti to get them to match
What was in the gaps? Hopefully just glue residue or dirt and not metal.
I remember when I was testing these in the original build I had to replace one of the diaphragms. It the coil/former was out of round. I could only detect it as a bit of injected distortion on certain notes. Due to that I'm pretty sure I inspected both rather closely at the time.
I did have the horn screwed on for the test. I don't know if the horn itself ringing, due to not being mounted to a baffle, could have much effect on it.
Combination of dirt and metal. I had to use tape to get the metal out, not easy.
