New cans headed my way.

Just ordered these. I have the wired version as well, and they are stellar: https://www.parts-express.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M50xBT2-Professional-Studio-Monitor-Headphones-with-Bluetooth-Black-242-4531?quantity=1

I think they can also be used wired. If so, I'm going to sell my current pair - if anyone is interested in best headphones under $200 that is.

  • I have a pair of the wired ones - the best headphones I've owned.

    Hope you enjoy them

  • We have a pair of those at Church (at least I think they are the same ones). I have worn them to single out individual channels on the the sound board. They sound really great but I am just not a headphones guy. I don't like the feeing of them on my ears and head. That said it took me a few years to get comfortable with wearing ear plugs at work everytime I have to do something on the production floor or in maintenace. In otherwords I'm sure I could get use to wearing cans, but then I may never want to build another pair of speakers :#

  • A very good pair of headphones can bring out more detail than speakers in a room, but good ones like the ATs are relatively heavy and the padding means that they can get a bit warm on your ears after a while. I still prefer listening to speakers, but there are times - like the gym or relaxing in bed - when headphones are the only option.

Not those Apple or similar ear buds things though, I hate their sound, or rather, lack of it.

^ I personally don't mind headphones, but I get this.

I had those AudioTechnica ones and gave them to my son, probably going on 10 years ago. I'm pretty sure he broke them within a year (he was 14 at the time).

My best headphones are these Sennheiser. The ear pads are velvet, they are open back, and crazy light. They are the only ones I can wear for over an hour. But being open back they aren't suitable for noisy environments like a coffee shop or airplane.

  • I think David had a typo there. He obviously meant cabinet shop but accidentally typed coffee shop instead.

Massdrop may have some deals around this time of the year on the hdxxx line of headphones.

  • For home use, I like my Sennheiser HD-600s, but I wish they had a little more bass. At work I have some KRK KNS-8400s in my camera bag. They sound fairly flat and have proven to be very road-worthy!

  • My old Grado sr60 and boy's Sennheiser hd6xx have a totally different presentation. I think his hd6xx are bass heavy to the point of being loose, the mids recessed, and the very top tipped up. He thinks my Grado were all middy and harsh treble. Then there's the Focal Elex ... balanced top to bottom, mico and macro dynamics, very good with the macro part, smooth but pick fly $hit out of pepper detailed which seems like it couldn't be both, but it is. Easy to tell when there has been a change upstream. Hot, heavy, and uncomfortable after 30 minutes of listening. Boy has a new pair of HiFiMan he4xx. Since I'm a planar fan, I was anxious to try them. Not sure how to describe the sound other than dark.

I don't wear headphones a lot, but when I do, I love my Senn 580s very comfortable, clean, balanced sound. - got them from Drop.

But Chahly - Stahkist don't want speakers that look good, Stahkist wants speakers that sound good!
  • I'm not a headphones guy, I tolerate them for recording music purposes. Honestly Im not sure, think they're Senn 600's? Also hate ear buds too, tolerate those for cutting the grass, that's it.
If I'm listening to Iron Maiden, so is everyone around me. 😉

  • I forgot about the Koss cans I have at work. A steal for $40. They look like cheap crap from the 80s, but actually sound pretty decent. I can hear when the phone rings and they are so light you almost forget you have them on.

  • I did a headphone "shootout" a few years ago with a musical buddy. We had the Drop Senn 6xx, the ESS headphones, and one other "mid-fi" pair. Over a variety of tracks I expected one pair would "shine", but what we found was that different phones sounded better on different tracks.

  • These are my current favorite pair of what I own. Last I knew about $100. Lots of detail, and very dynamic.

I also have a set of Sony MDR-V700DJ. Bought them new from Best Buy with Reward Zone credits. Were $150, and i paid half that. The pads and headband pleather rotted as they tend to do. I fixed the headband and replaced the pads. Unfortunately, I need to get different unventilated pads for better bass response like before. These are special sounding or I'd have just tossed them instead of fixing them.
I have a set of Talent frames with Peerless 50mm elements in them. These are super easy and can listen a long time.
Lastly, I have a set of cheap sacrificial frames with 50mm Tectonic Elements head-speakers in them. Really get muddy directly on the head, and open and clean up about 1-2" away. Have yet to try ventilated pads on these.

  • So I will be posting my wired pair of the 50x for sale. If anyone on this thread is interested, let me know.
