OmniMic distortion issues with new computer

Just got a new laptop for CSS and was hoping to do tweeter QC measurements at my workstation as I had done with previous laptops. Going through all the same steps I have in the past to get OmniMic to work with a given computer, I'm seeing distortion spikes about every 2/3 octave which are not present when using other laptops (see pic). Anybody seen anything like this?

The details of the setup are:

CD playing OmniMic test track through Parasound Zamp, through passive crossover, to LD25X tweeter

OmniMic V2, software v5.2

New laptop:

Old laptop:

I can just keep using the old laptop for measurements until it dies, so it's not a huge deal, but it sucks when you upgrade equipment and lose functionality, so any ideas you guys might have for potential solutions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Try an external sound card, maybe? Might just be shit built in DAC.

    I have a signature.
  • I had a Lenovo desktop that had some "audio enhancement" software running sort of under the covers that messed with measurements. Make sure that crap is turned off, if not removed.

But Chahly - Stahkist don't want speakers that look good, Stahkist wants speakers that sound good!
  • Kindof reminds me of the inverse of an issue zaph had on his earlier measurements... The fundamental on the graphs would exhibit valleys at intervals on his distortion measurements.

  • I didn't have problems using the USB-C or 3 type (blue) on my last year purchased Asus Tuf with Omnimic V1 running latest software, but the lower standard USB jack gave my T/S and impedance hardware a lot of noise. I ended up purchasing a card reader for that function from Walmart that was a micro-C cable dongle. Pretty sure it's a Vivitar brand. It has USB-C (blue) outputs on the dongle that run clean with no noise, so I've been doing it that way. I did have to turn off enhancements in the Audio tab as well like Don suggests, but the noise did not go away until I started using the highest transfer rate Micro-C jack.

  • Thanks guys - I had seen the sound enhancement and turned it off, but it was pretty easy to find so I wonder if I need to dig a little deeper for some other "enhancements". I'm definitely using the USB-A input, so I'll try the USB-C input and see what that gets me.

  • I have had issues with equipment powered off computer USB. A powerd usb hub might help if this is related to usb noise.

  • I just wish my omnimic would work on my windows 11 laptop.

If it is plugged into the charger, try unplugging it. Chargers can introduce noise...

    What's the problem?

  • My OmniMic works fine on all 3 of my laptops. Windows 7, 10, and 11 OS.

  • DATS too.

Mine didn't at first, then, and this won't make much sense, I attempted to download microsoft.net framework 3.5 (it appears this is necessary) but it seemed stuck for the better part of an hour, so I cancelled the download and then OmniMic worked???

USB-C didn't work any better and neither did unplugging the charger. Dug around for any other weird settings and couldn't find anything. I'll just use the old laptop for now, but if you guys have any other ideas, I'm all ears.

I'll give this a try at some point...

Haven't investigated this .net framework 3.5, nor do I even know what that is.

  • Treat it visually like downloading a program from the web, in this case microsoft.com, and get it from support or downloads section. It should be in the APPS section on your laptop if you already have it.

  • Can you send a screenshot of what this app looks like?

Lol no, because it wouldn't download for me, but after I tried to download it and cancelled halfway, OmniMic started recognizing the mic. It doesn't appear to be something you need to access after the fact, just something your computer needs to have on hand to operate certain programs. I noticed when I updated my computer after all of this went down that the .net framework 3.5 was one of the updates, so it seems like this is already operating at some level.

  • Sorry, that was directed towards what Ben said. Thanks for responding though, Dan.👍

  • Maybe later this evening I can hop on the laptop and take a shot. I'll see what I can do....

  • If you need .net upgraded , I would just run your windows update. .net gets pushed out with winders updates

  • That was one of the updates waiting for restart. Ran restart. I'll be damned, Omnimic finally works!! I'm updating my post on TechTalk. Thanks for the heads up guys!!🤘🏼
