What Nick said ^^, plus sometimes they might crackle a bit, sometimes they start to sound rolled off. I've had a few 12AX7s that hummed when they went bad. It depends on the tube and what it's doing in the circuit.
Every once in awhile I pick up distortion on my left tweeter, at first I thought I missed something voicing the ribbons, but the distortion is also present a different speaker.
Device in question is a FX-Audio TUBE-01 buffer. I have another one I may just throw in and see what happens, and if distortion goes away I will find some tubes. They are little fellers, 6J1 maybe?

Are there two tubes (i.e. one for each channel)? If yes, swapped them and see if the problem follows one of the tubes. Then you'll know for sure.
Rotated a design using Viawave ribbons back in, the issue presents more obviously on them. I also swapped the tubes around, I'll see.
Well, one thing I have not tried is swapping cables. Maybe that is where the issue is?
All different electronics, plus streaming from hard drive and on-line, three different pair of speakers. Mrs. JR confirms the distortion so it isn't just my ear.
What changed before you noticed this distortion, JR?
I hesitate to offer advice to you considering your depth of knowledge/experience but . . .
I am having noise problems with a control4 amp, Flex8 and miniPC right now and it is driving me crazy.
Starting with only the amp connected to the speakers and NO OTHER devices or cables - then start adding just the input cables to the amp (listen @ High Volume HV) then connect to the next upstream device . . . (repeat) . . .
One of the Chinesium 12ax7 tubes in the modified Bravo headphone amp performed a similar feat while it sat for a couple months unused. Took a while to figure it out. Have some 6j1, and equivalents, sitting here in a box. Was hoping you only needed one as they're a couple that didn't match well with any of the other tubes. Gotta go mop up some water and run conduit/wire. pm you later.

Break up , maybe some microphonics not heard before , maybe...

There can be a definite distortion, kind of like a bad driver.
The last 12ax7 that failed started putting noise into the channels.

Looks like these might work:

I am not a tube knowledgeable person, however. I do know I enjoy whatever it is doing to my signal chain so want to continue using it.

I have eliminated the amp as the issue.
6j1p Um, you know someone might have a few of those laying around ...
Yeah?
Need one or two?
two, PM me.
Never mind, problem does not follow the tube. Issue is something else.
I will swap the buffer out with another one and then try a different DAC.
Different DAC might be in order, ugh. I have another of these as well. Still sucks.
Well fuck, so its either my ears or the Chinese tubes - no matter what I have tried, this issue persists.
I'll try rolling some better tubes and see what happens.

Deep dive time.
OK, so different RCA and USB cables and shit is still there.
Is it possible that the type of tube really is at fault here? Not sure what else it could be at this point.

Stop by tomorrow and grab this 12ax7 tube pre I have. Hit me up if you want to try it.
