Budget Preamp?

I'm looking for a budget preamp around $100.  I could go used solid state or build a passive.  Basically I'm looking for ideas.  No dac or phono pre is needed.  I need the volume control to take an analog CD player into a power amp.

I'm eying this and a few kenwood preamps on ebay.  The kenwood KC-991 preamps look sketchy but I know nothing.

Ideas?

I would suggest a DIY tube preamp, but there is nothing budget about those things

The Schiit you linked to would be my suggestion at your original budget requirements. I had an opportunity to demo one recently along with one of their headphone amps and was really impressed with the fit and finish in addition to the sound quality.

I have a B&K Reference 20 Preamp-Processor that would do the job and be within your budget. Let me know if you are interested.

I got the B&K preamp from Scott.  This was the first I'd heard of them.  Wow this thing is nice.  Build quality is very good.
