Unlikely source for beautiful maple

edited March 2019 in DIY
I picked up some maple baseboard and casing for my basement from menards and some of it is incredibly beautiful. Here are some pics of some figuring. They are perfectly smooth so all detail they show is figuring and not planing marks. Just FYI in the event you don’t want to spend a fortune on some accent pieces for your projects.

  • Wow that is pretty!
  • The bottom two are different angles of the same board. I didn’t have the heart to use it for trim so I kept it aside and will buy a different one.

  • Oh my!  The guy grading wood let that slip into the baseboard pile.

  • It looks like it wasn’t just a missed board in sorting. It appears there is no sorting. I’m picking several others out of the same lot, although not as good, however I found a stunning piece of colonial casing I have no need for but am snagging for perhaps a future end table trim piece.

  • There's no sorting. There are usually boards like this in a pile of soft maple. Just have to look. :+1:
  • I just picked up some 1x3 in Maple at Menards, wish I had looked around more now.

Funny thing happened while there.  Somehow while looking through the boards for the ones with the most character I must have cut my thumb on something, and those migraine pills I take, they must also thin the blood a lot.  Anyhow, paid for everything at the checkout and then notice something red on the wood about the same time the kid behind me noticed a small puddle of blood on the counter.

    Wow.

The kid slowly backed away from the counter not taking his eyes off the puddle.  The checkout girl got all excited and started calling for her boss.  Her boss got all excited and called for someone with some kind of cleaner.  They all backed away from the counter and stared at it like satan was staring back at them.

I put my head down and slowly exited the building expecting any minute to be jumped by security for an act of terrorism.  Jeez ...

  • More likely because they are afraid of big fat lawyers.
I don't think Menards are on a high priority terrorist target list.
  • Blood is considered a biological hazard everywhere.  Only trained should people clean up and put into special bags, etc.  The reaction is normal at schools and most businesses.

John H, btw forum has decided I don't get emails
  • I didn't even know until paying and picking up my stuff.  I think the kid behind me noticed first.  Pretty darn embarrassing.  At any minute I expected to be escorted off with dudes in hazmat suits.

New look for the tube pre-amp, blood stained Maple.
  • Menards is a strange strange store.  They have everything from nuts to nuts (if you've ever seen their semi trailers you know what I'm talking about).  Most of the time I avoid Menards because I've always been disappointed with the quality of what I've purchased.  But every once in a while I find a killer deal like you just did.  Like when they had the UltraSonic Acoustic Panels (12" x 12" x 1" denim panels) on clearance.  I bought almost 200 square feet for peanuts.

You could have bought 200 square AND peanuts!

    sorry..couldn’t resist!

Good to know, I will be checking the stock more often for sure
  • I like Menards. I too bought a lot of the denim panels. I bought out 2 stores' stock of it.
