Dayton Audio Esoteric woofers discontinued

I just found out today that the Dayton audio Esoteric woofers have been discontinued. !'m working on a design that uses two of the ES180TiA-8's for the bottom end of a 3-way tower speaker.

These woofers where never that popular with DIYer's probably due to the high price, low sensitivity and less then exemplary high end roll off which made them not easy to work with for two-way designs.

I'm only going to be using them up to around 400 Hz and they are excellent in that range. I'm doing an active crossover design so the low sensitivity is not a big deal for me, and amplifier watts are not that expensive these days.

  • I also have a pair that I bought several years ago when they were the deal of the day at PE.

Currently planning on making a smallish 3-way bookshelf with them crossing to a dome mid.

  • I too have a pair of the ES180TiA-8, although I don't know what I'm going to do with them.

  • I played around with them years back in an active miniDSP design. I had a couple guys over for a listen- they could play fairly deep.

  • That's quite the esoteric configuration!

  • No doubt!

  • I think I've seen that before, but not behind the grills.

Bryan came over with a couple other guys- I unfortunately don’t remember who. I don’t believe I pulled off the grill - as I was working on a potentially proprietary project.

  • I saw this at Grand Rapids I believe, and maybe InDIYana as well.

  • Trying to tame or create a resonance?
