Countersinking bolts

edited September 2016 in DIY
Any ideas on how I can countersink these bolts into the baffle? I already drilled the 1/4" holes in the baffle for the bolt to pass thru but looking back I think I should have drilled the countersink part first then the thru hole. The bolt head is just over 5/8" in diameter. I have tried using my forstner bits and flat wood bits but they don't work well because I have already drilled the 1/4" hole so they can't center themselves on the small tip on the bits.

  • You're going to have to make a jig with a forstner bit, then use a router to make the recess.  It will also help prevent tear out.

  • 1/4" dowel?
............. could you hum a few bars.
  • I would try Kenny's idea.  Insert 1/4" dowels, cut to proper length, then center drill those with an 1/8" guide hole to keep your forstner bit centered.

  • I'm an amateur woodworker, but what would stop you from clamping down the piece and then using a drill press with a forstner bit to drill the hole?

  • You could use a mortising router bit in a plunge router.

  • I've got an old manual pencil sharpener which works great to put a taper on 1/4 inch and 5/16 dowels, add some glue, tap tight, saw off with a flush cut saw.

  • I will try the dowel and forstner bit idea this weekend. Thanks guys!! =)
  • Forstner is the way to go! Plus it makes an automatic Center punch hole for your bit. Without a drill press I wouldn't try the forstner without filling the previous hole.
