Tunes

Soo, with the DIY season in the vaults, it is time to go back to listening strictly to music I love. Looking over the playlist on my work PC, a few cuts stand out as songs that I always want to hit repeat on, that I never skip, or always stir emotion.

In no particular order and under no illusion of inclusivity:

1. "Bobcaygeon" - Tragically Hip
2. "Float On" - Modest Mouse
3. "Some Nights" - Fun
4. "And It Stoned Me" - Van the Man
5. "The Man Who Sold The World" - David Bowie
6. "Sugar Were Going Down" - Fall Out Boy
7. "Don't Dream It's Over" - Crowded House
8. "Ho Hey" - Lumineers
9. "God Only Knows" - Beach Boys
10. "Where Do You Go To My Lovely" - Peter Sarstedt

These are just some of what just popped at me from my playlist. Of course, there are perhaps 2000 other songs that fit the bill - most of which will never show up on a demo or voicing session.

  • Nice thread. Ill reply with some thought later, but many times most of what I listen to is not the "audiophile" or voicing stuff, but very moving for me personally. 10 to come.

Though there are thousands. A few buddies and I made a desert island 100 track list and compared.

Sugar we're going down and Float On are great!
  •     This is harder than I thought. Following your metrics and reasoning in the matter here is my 10.

    1. "We're in This Together Now" - NIN
    2. "Hunter/Killer" - Fear Factory
    3. "Down'easter Alexa" - Billy Joel
    4. "Train" - John Mayer
    5. "Like a Rock" - Bob Seger
    6. "Mercy Street" - Peter Gabriel
    7. "Bess, You is my Woman Now" - as interpreted and written by Aaron Diehl
    8. "Coma" - Guns and Roses
    9. "The Tryst" - Sibelius, composed for solo piano by David Stanhope
    10. "Lazy Mornin'" - Gordon Lightfoot

  • I've been all over the place lately, mostly listening to "extreme quality" Spotify, Here are some choice cuts, IMO.

The Dazz Band - Let It Whip. Man, the recording on this is great. Clean clear bass line, and some mixer effects that raise the bar of what you could do in 1982.

Alt-J - Something Good. Just a crystal clear track with excellent atmospherics. Yay.

Muse - MK Ultra. Same band and disc John mentions above, but this track just knocks it out of the park IMO. Harmonies built upon harmonies. I can listen to it again and again.

Falco - Der Kommissar. I can't really establish anything redeeming here, but Falco holds a special place in my heart.

Jasmine Thompson - Mad World. An acoustic cover of Tears for Fears - Mad World with an intimate intensity the original lacks.

Mogwai - Sine Wave. What can I say about this track? Its crazy intense prog-rock that'll make you think about music in a fresh way. Well maybe, or you might think its crap. YMMV,

  • Cracked open my CD vault and I'll agree with Mike that this is harder than it seems, especially with your criteria.

    In no particular order:
    1) "English Sunset" - Moody Blues
    2) "Symphony No.2" - Gustav Mahler
    3) "Sound of Silence" - Simon and Garfunkel
    4) "The Last Resort" - Eagles
    5) Violin Concerto - Antonin Dvorak
    6) "A German Requiem" - Johannes Brahms
    7) "Jupiter" - from 'The Planets' by Gustav Holst
    8) "Rocketman" - Iron Horse (the bluegrass band)
    9) "I'm So Lonely I Could Cry" - Volbeat
    10) "Miserere" - Allegri

By no means inclusive, but there ya go.

  • Great thread but it's too late for me to chime in right now. I will though, soon. One thing: having hung out with JP for a few days across the Iowa DIY I can vouch for him being "all over the place!!"  It was cool listening to some of his playlists. When Falco popped up I knew JP was a cool dude. Lol.
