I voice in stereo nowadays, for me when i used to do it in mono i had to make too many changes when i actually went stereo. I used to use a bunch of alligator clips, i switch to a quick solder and not twisted like John. Seems to eliminate some problems for me.
In a pett post, @fpitas recommends using polypropylene film motor start capacitors when large values are needed. Been looking on the bay and found 80uf - 400uf polys from $7 - $14. I need some large values for another unfinished 3-way, will these work? Sound quality? Can multiples be stacked like other caps? Can an npe or other much smaller poly be mixed with them to get the needed uf? What about the other types, especially the air/oil?
Make sure they are truly poly, some unscrupulous sellers out there. I have seen some pretty wild tolerances, as well. I doubt they are sonically inferior, but just do a little homework. Look for "CBB" in description, you want a "run" style, not a start style. There are poly start caps, but generally they are not. The run caps are expected to endure a lot more shit so they are better constructed etc.
Rival Caps were okay, and not just okay. I liked them.
If you want poly motor run, check Allied Electronics or the 'bay for ASC X386 or X387 poly in oil capacitors. I've used and like them a lot for xovers.
ended up with ClarityCap and Jantzens rather simple comp'ed to what's been on display at the diy shows, but still not wanting to mount it inside the box...
If you think about size and how big they'd become; polystyrene, Teflon, and AgMi will usually not be available much above 3.0, 3.0, and 0.1uF respectively. These are all true film/foil caps too. The Teflon 3.3uF I have from VCap are 43mm x 60mm. The RTX 'styrenes from MultiCap are about the same size. The AgMi I've linked above are not small, 22mm x 32mm x 42mm- FOR A 0.1uF CAP! If it got to 1.0uF, it'd be 10x that size.
I’m down to the British vs. the French for a 2.0uF capacitor
ClarityCap CSAs vs. Solen Silvers ??? While I'm anticipating 'order one of each and listen'... always curious as to what you guys may have experienced / suggestions. THX
I don't like the Solen Silvers. If you are willing to spend that much, get the Jantzen Superiors or Mundorf Supreme. Or save a bit and get the Audyn Cap Plus.
Solen Silvers are good across woofers, and better than the equivalent black model in the same position. I would not series either with mids or tweeters- ever. Gritty and spitty.

Those surplus caps Ben likes are an affordable way to get larger values.

Size is large though- if that matters.
There is also a 60uF for $17.93.
It depends on which one you order, as some are special order, some are MOQ, and some are limited supply or overstock.
