Without a template it can still be done with a little extra care. Trace the shape, route the straight lines using a straight edge, then plunge the round bits with the Circle jig. Clean up the corners with a chisel if needed. I did exactly this with a truncated driver recently and it worked very well.

Mark over at Meniscus has a nifty template with router bit he sells to flush mount the Eclipse woofers. That is what Craig used.
