One of my favorite pieces of hyperbole is the notion of woofers driven so hard that they spit their voice coils out onto the carpet. This is pretty close.
Not my speakers, thankfully. But from the owner:
"I used ARC SP20 [preamp] and a pair of EC AW600 mono to drive my LS50. For the past 3-4 years, I have been enjoying the combination. Lately I found issues with the pre-amp. Thus I removed the SP20 and temporarily used with a DAC that has volume control. I set up well and enjoyed for a few days. Yesterday I plugged in the streamer and forgot to set the DAC USB default output volume from 99% to lower level. The above units were blown seconds after I switched the selector."
Hindsight is always 20/20, right?

That burnt voice coil smell is something that sticks around for awhile.

For some reason it reminds me of those coins that they shrink with a sacrificial coil and a bank of giant capacitors.
A long time ago, I read somewhere that you could plug a Hartley 24" subwoofer into a wall socket and the driver would simply hum at 60Hz all day long. Does that sound reasonable?
I did that with an old school Kicker Solobaric and it took it until we got bored.
Hehe, video I took at work one night with a high speed camera. Driver came out of a shitty pair of PC speakers

Good times.
Planning for the next Meniscus event?
So, early 2000's I worked as a car audio installer and we sold lots of brands but my favorite subwoofers were the MTX. The MTX 7500 and up would take a wall socket like a champ. We had one 6500 that had some coil rub so we plugged it into the wall to make sure it was cooked before we sent it in for warranty and it ran for minutes! We had the same concern with a 7500 and could not get it to blow. To me, the most impressive part was the fact that these were speakers without a box.
