  • If your goal is dynamic range, you've come to the right place

  • Those are some serious woofers that can really kick. Where did you come into 5 of them? The buyout was like 22 years ago.

  • Back when Lansing heritage forums was still a thing, I bought a couple from members there, and also ebay with great diligence. I now have some JBL W1500H drivers to play with as well.

  • Oh boy, Differential Drive woofers! I've not had a chance to hear either of the mentioned subs, but I know they claim a high price and their reputation in clean bass is as good as it gets. IIRC, the SUB1500 were used in the huge Wilson Thor's Hammer subwoofer.

I remember the buyout well, as I opted for some Eminence 12" because they were smaller than 15" drivers, but looked hard at those in the same time frame. It wasn't a week from being in stock to gone that these moved out the door at PE.

W1500h isn’t a DD woofer - it’s a development of SUB1500, used in, e.g. the Synthesis S2S-EX. (One of the nicer vented subs I’ve heard!) So standard JBL big coil, vented gap, ceramic motor. But tons more throw than the usual 2235H or their other mainstream pro 15.

The 15” DD supersubs are W1xGTi car woofers and I think 2256G for 15, and the 18” DD supersubs 2269, Revel Sub18 driver (don’t know p/n), and 2288. Revel 18 has rubber surround and maybe metal cone, don’t know if otherwise different. 2288 is the successor to 2269, and is rated at 1mm more throw. Though the studio Sub18 still uses 2269.

I thought Wilson used one of the standard JBL woofers. SUB1500 was for Revel’s OG Ultima Sub and I think an EU or Japanese market sub - HB1500 or something like that.

    To the OP, beautiful work!

  • Jhaider is correct, not a DD woofer. I had a pair of W15GTis and I regret selling them just because of the inherent resistance to over excursion of the DD motor. The SUB1500 was apparently designed for ridiculously small sealed enclosures (like 1.5cuft) but I just don't have a high enough amp service at the house to support all the required power, so I opted for a slightly larger box.

  • Honestly, I saw the W, and thought that meant it was of the same bones. My mistake, but thanks for the info!

  • That’s an impressive array of subwoofers! Good luck with sale!

Wolf, I have a pair of JBL’s differential drive 15” subs that have been on my shelf for two years. Remarkably lightweight with their cast aluminum frame/heatsink and neo magnets. Model 2266H. Fingers crossed I get around to using them this year.
