Dayton Audio RS52FN-8 2" Reference Fabric Dome Midrange

Comments

  • No personal experience with it but from what I have seen it is an OK option for a dome midrange. It seems that most prefer the HiVi options for both cost and performance. Like all drivers, it seems to matter most per application.

    Looks like the Dayton is the better option if you need it to play low, the HiVi if you need more efficiency.

  • I have a pair I'm listening too right now and they are GTG - much better than the Aluminum units I tried.

    Just remember that this is a subjective opinion - using DSP - woofer rolled-off LR24db/oct @ 700Hz and RS52FN crossed-in LR12db/oct @ 700Hz.

  • From the Compass graphs, it looks like the Dayton aluminum is smoother than the fabric. I'll have to give it some thought.
    Thanks

    I think the consensus about 10 years ago was that the Alu model just didn't sound very good. IDK though never used it.

    But Chahly - Stahkist don't want speakers that look good, Stahkist wants speakers that sound good!
  • I didn't spend any time trying a passive Z correction/compensation but this thread for your consideration --> https://diy.midwestaudio.club/discussion/2491/rs52an-8-break-up-suppression#latest

    Yeah it seemed another resonance crept into production right smack in the middle of the response of the Al units.

  • Yep, this new centralized dip/peak happened when they had to switch vendors because Peerless of India closed up shop. Jon Marsh at HT guide has documented the change rather well.

    I have heard both mids. I never really liked how the A sounded, despite its original supposed good measurements. The F sounded better to me, despite supposedly measuring worse. I've only heard it twice, IIRC, and really can't completely vouch for either implementation. The MDM55/CAM558 (which is back at PE again) is clearly better than both by sound comparison. The HiVi DMN-A and DMB-A seem to be a better bang/buck.

    Hardly a consensus. There are fans of it, just not as vocal as the opponents.

    I've used the MDM55 before with very good results and may settle on that. I'm trying to plan for a build in the Spring.

  • FWIW I designed and built my Gormachos 8+ years ago. We have been listening to them in our living room for the entire time except for when I cycle in new builds for a week or two. They use the CAM558 dome mid, Usher 8945A ported, and the Fountek CD1.0. One of my favorite midranges, period!

  • I used the Morel in Nick's 3-way, definitely easy to work with. One of them had skyhigh distortion, so had to order replacement.

  • I used the fabric version in my Active Acoustics 3-way a few years ago - my first entry to the PE speaker competition. As the name suggests, active DSP. Absolutely need to cross above 6-700 Hz if you want to play at real volume. Been a while but I think low pass was around 4000 Hz. I haven’t listened to the Morel domes others seem to love. At least in my setup I find them very relaxed and ‘comfortable’ to listen to.
