I made the speaker stands out of cherry and MDF covered with black Formica. The base was cut from 1 1/8" stair tread and the top is 3/4".  I cut a grove in the back of the cherry post and hid the speaker wire in the channel with a couple of thumb tacks. I put a terminal cup in the base to connect to.
