Help me find a HT 5.1 preamp/processor

Looking for a 5.1 HT preamp for my little brother-in-law.  Already scored a great 5ch amp.....just need a processor or some tips on where to get one for less than $150.  Not worried about HDMI, as it will just handle audio.  Any help/advice?  Thanks!!

  • Following! Still have a 5channel adcom.
  • There's a few at accesories4less.com. But these are HT receivers/amps, standalone processor will be pretty difficult to get at this price range.

  • I guess if HDMI is not a requirement, then shopping for a slightly older but otherwise high end AVR will yield some pretty good and affirdable results.

Like that guy. Lots and lots of the older high end component video equipped AVR floating around for a great price, I just happened to search for a specific Marantz model.

Speaking of legacy, I have one of these Outlaw units that is in fine working condition that I would give up and could bring to Grinnell. Working remote included. Definitely in your price or trade range. I'm on the road this week, so if anyone is interested...I may not be able to respond promptly.

That could work or at least will jibe with the amp I already have. Is $100 out of line?

Man....seeing that and seeing Ani's link to the refurb units makes me think I should keep the amp I already bought and scoop up a used 5.1 receiver (for my bro-in-law) and not worry about any need for headroom.  It is going into an apartment.

  • Charge a small fee for your services, offset the costs of keeping the amp. Get some surrounds or minidsp for a 2way plus a small sub.

My finalists and ons surrounds work well on my htr (ons surrounds are 4ohm, finalists i think hit 5ohm, ill know after i finish the center its 4ohm as well).
  • This sucks for a "straight wire with gain" guy.

I've not even talked to him yet to figure out the absolute best situation for him.  Because he's family you know I'm not getting out of this one on the good end.

  • Thanks guys. I went ahead and got the Pioneer that Ani linked to.  Having bluetooth for streaming is something my bro-in-law would use a lot and the price is right.....and it has HDMI connectivity.  Can't go wrong for $150.  I'll be keeping the 70lb behemoth and probably taking Mike's advice to use that amp as a miniDSP solution. But just in case, I'm also grabbing Rich's Outlaw processor.

  • Who makes the top HTR's now? Anyone have experience with anthem or the other 1000-2k ish HtR's?
  • Emotiva with dirac live? Any of the 11.4 receivers?
  • My dad is looking at anthem and 7.1 channek 4k ones. His pioneer elite just died. Definately wants an htr and not seperates. He has a full klipscj setuo so really high sensitivity speakers no crazy amps needed.
