The Ceramic/Aluminum drivers look nice, can't complain about the response, and I like the matte white look of the cones. I also like that the models are a 5" and 8", not another boring 6.5" . Paired with a Ceramic TL tweeter that could be a very nice "white" 3-way build.
The Audax looks interesting too, the one peice cone/surround is something unique. It's like a cross between a accordian and a rolled edge. Should make for a very nice midrange driver. And here I thought Audax was pulling out of the DIY market.
It seems to me that the SB29SDAC has a very impressive FR, especially off-axis and for the price. I wonder if they will come out with a ceramic tweeter.
I will be very interested in the distortion of the ceramic drivers. If they're typical of SB, they should be excellent. I'm looking for drivers for my next build. I've been considering Satori, Motus and a few others. These might be a good, less expensive option.
Whoo-hoo! My new SB 5" ceramic drivers are here! I just opened the boxes and visually inspected them. VERY high quality thus far. More to follow (some break in and T/S measurements).

Hi Craig,
This is a very interesting looking driver. Are you set up for FR and distortion measurements?
Sure can do different colors, I bet. Just easier and cheaper to not do so, I imagine. In any event, Klipsch has gold colored cones they advertised as Cerametallic, and Infinity has had several different shades of gray on their MMD/CMMD cones.

Yes, I use OmniMic. I also have a 48" x 48" infinite baffle with interchangable plates for testing different sized drivers.

Just saw this...
IIRC, the black cones Accuton were using were coated with a polymer or something, and the surface was not the ceramic layer. Arial Acoustics? I don't remember the company that had them.
I always wondered how much ceramic their cerametallic material was.
Hi guys, I just finished measuring the T/S parameters with DATS after a mild break in (flexed by hand followed by 60 Hz free air at 6.3 volts for a couple minutes). I started with 10.1 grams added mass but it was too low. So I ended up measuring Vas with 3 nickels (15.1 gram) stuck to the dust cap. Here is the data (Manufacturer, Driver A, Driver
Fs 35.5 39.03 37.68 Re 5.7 5.662 5.693 Qms 4.77 4.389 4.432 Qes .42 .5184 .4856 Vas 17.9 11.29 11.58 Le .14 .1282 .1339
Pretty darn close compared to most drivers I have measured. The Fs and Qes is higher but the Vas is lower. I bet when box modeling the differences are a wash. The impedance plot was nice and smooth with only a tiny 1/2 ohm blip at 10 KHz (way outside the pass band). The impedance rise was extremely low due to the ~0.13 mH inductance.
I will measure the FR and distortion this weekend.

I know- just didn't have time to knab it...

Audax pulled out years ago, but AAC is still producing a few of the older drivers as they wish.
It looks like the Audax is an older Polydax model from the spec-sheet.
...and yes- I thought everyone had Mad in their favorites folder. It was 3 clicks for me!

Being that it's an oxidation layer on Al, or AlO2, can you actually have a black ceramic?
I honestly don't know if that's even possible.

But is the black finish ceramic?
