Get familiar with the reaction system: Introducing the Reaction System

Excelsior Design/Build Thread

edited March 2018 in DIY
As I'm finally getting started on this monster speaker, I'll record my progress here (with pics!). All in the final design stage now, here is what I've got:

Design is a tall monster: S/WW/MT/WW

Starting from the treble and working down:

T: Viawave small ribbon RT850. Sounded great in JR's Taiga.
M: Scan 15M/4264G. Not a revelator or anything, but high sensitivity, phase plug, foam surround. Response looks very very flat.

WWWW: MCM 55-2669. Lots of them. Clean midbass driver, but doesn't dig deep. Going to put them in a resistive type cardioid setup.

A: Dayton's RSS460HO-4. 18" sub, works well in 75L sealed (F3 <40 hz), is sensitive enough to keep up with the rest.

Doing enclosure design now.

  • Nice!  What no cardioid on the mid?  :o

Does anyone have practical knowledge of x-mechanical limits of the RSS dayton subs? I ask because as I explore models: The 15" HF model digs deeper in a 65 liter sealed box than the 18", and gives up only about <2db output at 500W.

John: I'm still exploring how the front baffle will work. I'm not sure any advantage is gained from that box type for the mid? Time will tell.

  • I consider cardioid to be controlled dipole response.  The rear loading can be tailored between a dipole and oversized sealed enclosure.  I recall using horn response to attempt to model the woofer loading.

As you have rear radiation, you can get the openness of a dipole without the placement issues.  By using a cardioid mid you would be at the frequencies where you can hear the openness.  Below 1,000 or so Hz, the sound is not that detectable.

The downside is you have to repetitively adjust and test to get the rear wave and x-o right, but it sounds like fun.  This has been on my list to try for awhile.  I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

  • Midrange driver is likely getting an upgrade:

Fedex dropped these off today, can't wait to start listening and measuring!

  • What a shame to put those in a box.

  • With felt damping?? What that mean exactly?

I dunno. Only one of the drivers was marked that way. I'll have to compare them all later and see.

  • Love speaker porn.
............. could you hum a few bars.
  • This is gonna be great! We need more large format speakers!

To continue with that weird "WITH FELT DAMPING" sticker, I carefully visually inspected all three drivers this morning. No visible differences to my eye, though I can't see up inside the motor cavity (even with the huge vent hole in the magnet). I don't know why you'd line felt in there though. Maybe someone at Madisound was having a laugh and put that sticker on the box, lol.

  • Is there a part number or production code somewhere and is it the same?
  • A quick dats comparison might be all it takes.

Am I reading correctly that the sub will be passive?

  • You can see the part number label on the magnet rear, the same sticker on the box (only sticker) and each driver has a small white barcode serial number on it's frame. *shrugs*

It is going to be essentially a large 3-way tower with an active sub at the base. My current plan is to use a Behringer NX3000DSP to drive the two sealed 15" boxes.

  • This is gonna be good.

Trust me, my mind is turning on how I could leave the back open enough so you can view the driver. I totally agree.

  • This will be good ....
  • Glass back?
  • Another piece of the Excelsior puzzle arrived today. Time to crunch on actual implementation, as I want everything to break down so I can ship the thing to events.

Also, while fully expected from avsforum threads: fastest fan replacement in history. I turned it on, heard the whirr/grind, and turned it right back off. Installed a completely silent BeQuiet fan with the same airflow rating. No excuse for these crap fans on this device, the BeQuiet is a 10$ part. Probably under 5$ in quantity.
