Get familiar with the reaction system: Introducing the Reaction System

Change of direction - Insomnia related.

So I just bought a pair of the large Heil tweeters, on sale right now for around $300 with shipping. I was absolutely impressed with their performance in Nick's theme build. They are also pretty sensitive. This begs the question: what woofer?

Well, I have been sitting on a quad of MCM 8" carbon fiber woofers. They are 92db sensitive, which is good for an 8". In parallel with baffle step and insertion losses considered, they should be around 88-89db sensitive as a pair. Of course, I would also gain some of that back with lower woofer boundary loading. So call it 92db when all is said and done.

Anyways it is a damn good looking woofer:

It has limited advertised Xmax and very low Q. I did a project with this woofer many years ago and I would argue the Xmax is under-rated due to motor saturation. Old school way of reducing excursion related distortion. What bass there was (F3 of 50Hz in the vented cabinet I used) was extremely clean. Top end a little ragged, but crossing at ~1000Hz should take care of that bullshit.

Measured parameters:

Pair modeled in 2.5 cubic feet tuned to 45Hz. 1 ohm added series resistance. EBS alignment, but only by about 0.5db or so:

These woofers have been tickling me for some attention for quite some time now, and my impulse buy of the Heil may just be the ticket.

I have a signature.
