That's a great price - not fun to route though . . .
Looks like the stair threads are 3/4, are they more difficult to route than edge glued red oak or just plain old 3/4 red oak?
@hifiside are you planning to cnc these? I have experince with routingred oak board from menards, but haven't tried stair treads - definley slower and shallower pass than mdf and bit more prone to breaking and it schreeches like a banshee... are stair treads going to be an even louder screamer?
No, I didn’t buy any stair treads. I just thought it was a good price and I was sharing
But yes, with oak, walnut and a few other really hardwoods. I do like a 10 pass run when I cnc
Nothing special about stair treads. Sometimes they can be thicker than normal 1" material, and/or can be veneered MDF. But not in this case. It is just an edge glued oak board.
I use PB stair treads for almost all of my baffles. It is remarkably stiff and dense compared to regular PB and is 1-1/8" thick. Take the first couple passes slow and shallow when machining them and it will not let the smoke out.
Thanks for the details, I haven;t tried any stair thread - understand about the PD stair tread being denser, but the Hardwood ones makes sense since stair tread or not for a given thickness and wood species the hardnedd would be the same
I built my Plumber's Delight speakers with 1-1/8" thick particle board stair treads from Menards. Small 3 liter cabinets, rock solid. No bracing required.
I actually like how well those edge glued oak stair treads machine (whether the table saw or the router). I've had zero tear out issues and if you keep moving zero burns. I generally get the thicker 1-1/4" oak treads from Menards. They are usually around $25 for 1-1/8" x 11.5" x 48". They are super stiff at that thickness so you can get away with few mounting fasteners than would be possible with a standard 3/4" MDF baffle.
I built a pair of Scott's Matrix Revolution speakers using Menard's 1" thick edge glued pine stair treads. Some warpage ocurred during the construction process, but not too bad.
I keep getting busy or forgetting to stop by my local Menards. Their website says they still have 58 cans of that spray adhesive available. I sometimes use that to hold foam damping in place.

Anyone used the big GRS ribbons and have measurements for it? XO point, distortion, any good info on them
I'm interested also. Looks to be "same" as the Fountek NeoX3.0 based on Looks/dimensions and very similar FR graphs. Which has a rough estimate minimum of 2khz with 12db/oct filter.
I broke down and bought a pair of the big fellas. Mrs. JR will not be pleased as I have spent over $300 in last week or so lol. Oh well, onwards and upwards.

Nice! Is that Harbor freight? Or Menards?
Looks like Menards.
Yeah, didn't think HF would be selling Irwin
Yes Menards.

I'll swing by there today and see if there's anything left.

I should probably pick up a couple. I only got one of the other boards (alder?) they were previously selling.
Just picked up the last decent one - grabbed 6 of the particle board 4' shelf boards for $2.99 ea. Now I just need to decide what to build.
No blades left here, but plenty of stair treads.

In typical PE fashion, they put something on sale shortly after I buy something. The white cone 10" GRS woofer is on sale for $15. What the f**k.
Same thing happens to me, JR - those 8" planar and face plates are on sale now when I just bought them 2 weeks ago.
I really like the Wiim Pro streamer. The Wiim amp has a TPA3255 amp built in as well as optical, analog, HDMI, and Bluetooth in on top of its streaming options. It also has a 10-band parametric EQ. Based on the distortion graphs.. 3khz+ might be a better bet?
The aspect ratio bothers me
Narrow vertical directivity, maybe 2.5k...

Kinda like a certain Peavey buyout oh so long ago....😛
Kind of yes. Their little brother are more appealing to me, aesthetically speaking.
