  • It was agreat event as usual. BK always does a great job to make sure everyone is accommodated even all the sponsors. JP’s preamp was one of coolest things I seen this weekend. It made the show go smoother than ever. And JR thanks for making sure the venue is held down us.

The torture testing was fun, too. My poor speakers.
On the plus side, the woofers should be fully broken in now ... ;)

Torture tests are always fun. :)
  • Thanks to everyone who helps make this the best event of the year - the MAC crew, sponsors, designers, and everyone else that shows up. I'm looking forward to next year!

For those that asked on Saturday, here's the info for my demo tracks:

Hallelujah - Renee Fleming (Dark Hope)
Bad Moon Rising - 16 Horsepower (Hoarse)
Cotton Fields - Creedence Clearwater Revival (Chronicle Vol. 2)
Journey of the Sorcerer - Joby Talbot (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy)
Leader of Men - Cornbread Red (Pickin' on Nickelback)
  • DIY Iowa was the first event I attended way back in 2012... and have been attending since and it's the most anticipated event for the entire year, though i try to attend as many as I can.

A big shout out to MAC and esp Bryan and Jason (and JR too... ) and all the regulars and newcomers for making this the The DIY Event! I like the huge variety of designs and drivers and finish and try to pick up on drivers or shapes or finish or alignments that I would like to try, a great source of inspiration...! except for maybe what Brad does in his 7000 sq "speaker shop"!!! but auto paint is on my to do list.... but laziness and ease of use points to Duratex!

A couple of notes on my design - this made an appearance in Iowa in 2017, it was in raw mdf and active. unfortunately i forgot to get my mini-dsp, and though i got a mini dsp hd as a door prize, we couldn't get it to place nicely in the breakfast room... but it was played in other gatherings. I wanted to try curved speakers, and strangely decided to curve the back which made it a front ported and an accidental non modelable mltl! Also wanted to try a 8" two way, and this is what it resulted.... The placement and low bass was always an issue across the venues, but since it sounds decent in their designated place in my system, and it's such a hassle to dismantle a finished speaker and crossover and that i have lost the XO files, means i have not changed the crossover...

Baffle is red oak, tinted orange and pore filled in with black grain filler and water based varnish. Body is 3/4 mdf with a brace in the middle and back is half inch of 3 layers 3/16" HDF. with all the glue and the curve and tempered hardboard, it is quite stiff.

Woofer is Dayton RS225P 8 , better high end and less breakup than the aluminium version, the smaller drivers are great, this is a starange beast seems suited for two ways but needs a bigger box and doesn't go as low as the aluminum ones, so for three ways, the regular RS225 is better suited and cheaper too.

The tweeter is the Wavecor horn loaded 30mm tweeter "TW030WA12" 8 ohm tweeter in what they call a semi horn loaded. Anyways, the regular TW030 also goes pretty low for a two way is a generally better suited for a wider application. But this is what i got specifically for this design with the 8" paper woofer and crossed around 1800.

I am glad they sounded decent despite all the shortcomings and issues...

  • As for the demo track, this was all covers... which is difficult as I don't have a long history with well recorded western music other than pop or popular music which seem to make the billboard list and most of them are suitable for bathroom singing only.... so this is what I could come up with:

The demo track is uploaded here:
    https://drive.google.com/open?id=1374kuNdg0TssXPPR2molRMfA0C5XFwnH

    1. Old Town Road - Lil Nas X ft. Billy Ray Cyrus
The song sounded familiar and I assumed that it was a cover or a remix of a country song, but turns out is a not a cover or a remix. What is interesting that the song is original, but not the music. The banjo score is by nine inch nails, Ghost IV which anchors the entire music.

    2. Take me to the River - Eva Cassidy
Originally by the "Talking Heads" - Great voice, guitar and drums

    3. You haven't done nothing - Jen Chapin
Originally by Stevie Wonder. Good vocals with simple music and every instrument, vocals stands out...

    4. The Look of Love - Susana Hoffs
originally by Dusty Springfiled, Casino Royale OST which itself was a spoof James Bond movie. Cover was recorded for the Austin Powers movie - International Man of Mystery. This song is very airy.

    5. Yesterday - Himesh Patel
Originally by the Beatles - this is from the Yesterday OST. The other song which i really like is Long and Winding road when Himesh and Ed are having their throw down. Simple guy and guitar and the demo is the complete song

    Researching covers was fun!!!

  • Big thanks to Brian, Jason and JR. Financial support is important too JR.

Here's my track list. I'm uploading the sample tracks to a Google drive folder that contains all the demo tracks I've used over the years. https://drive.google.com/open?id=0Bx4GM_59aXYLYnk4OFJOZDFOZ00 Will there be a way to get copies of all the demo's?

    THX - Deep Note Intro

Chaka Khan - My Funny Valentine

Caribbean Jazz Project - Tjaded Moon

Strength in Numbers - Pink Flamingos

The Chieftains /w Bonnie Raitt - A Stor Mo Chroi

Keb' Mo' - What's Happening Brother

I've has a couple of people ask how I veneer round overs so I did a write up that's attached.

There were an abundance of great systems as always. I appreciated a chance to hear some of the kits that you read about all the time but I haven't heard. It was great to reconnect with old friends and meet some new people.

And finally, thanks for all the kind words about my NLA #7 speakers.

    Ron

  • @Ron_E , I don't see the attachment for the veneer. Maybe it didn't get attached?
  • This was another great event and I would like to thank Brian and Jason, JR for all the organizing and work that they do to make these events possible.

I really enjoy the laid-back atmosphere of this event vs the competition event at PE. I like talking with like-minded people about speaker design and amplifiers. I was Impressed with Jason’s front end set up that adjusted the volume level automatically – It was really cool.

I was surprised by the lack of open baffle designs especially considering the theme for next years Indiana DIY event. I think the best sounding design was the 3-way design by Jim Holtz/Curt Campbell but by a very thin margin as most of the speakers sounded great. Compared to the first loudspeaker event I attended in 2012 (MWAF) the level of sound quality of the speakers has come a long way in just 7 years.

And even thou Scott Sahlin’s speakers/amplifier took out the power to almost the entire city, I had a great time.

I'd gotten a message that I couldn't make an attachment to this thread and had changed my post to add a link and the forum hiccuped when I tried to re-edit the post and apparently it didn't take. Here's a link. I'd edit the typo in my OP but I don't see an edit button.  https://drive.google.com/open?id=1NgBf75K5spHOfCamI4ThN_reS8aFYDP9

Thanks for the kind words Shawn! Curt and I appreciate it. As always, the sound quality of our collaboration are a direct result of Curt's expertise. I just the cabinet guy. ;)

    You guys are great!!

Thank you for the kind words.

Don't listen to @jr@mac - He might not be writing code for the MAC forum or soliciting sporshipship for DIY events, but he is there when we need to secure an event space- and out of his own pocket for two years now.

Thank you JR - Iowa would not be happening without you.

@JasonP ; - you have catapulted DIY Audio into a realm that many have a hard time understanding. Your programming skills have made Iowa DIY the most efficient event in history.  It's hard to imagine what the next step is, but you will take us there, and I'm honored to be a part of that journey.

I'm not gonna weigh in specific designs because my ears suck ass. But I will say it was a blast fiddling around with multiple room placements with Ani's design.  JR tried to blow up his no name speaker,  It didn't blow up.

I have a hard time wrapping my head around a guy like @JasonP ; who tells me "don't worry about the cabinets for the speakers or the chassis of the preamp and DAC".  I'm shipping them back to him so he doesnt get held up by TSA.  yeah TSA fucked him on the way in.

We all do our part to make sure these events happen.

y'all know who you are.....I thank you all from the bottom of my old fart heart.

  • Here's my playlist - I was surprised only a few people had heard of The Tubes. Mark & I were in the back, reliving their live shows in the early 80s with all the costumes & props. Guess we're showing our age...

"Talk To You Later" - The Tubes - The Completion Backwards Principle
"Golden Slumbers"  - Ben Folds - I Am Sam Soundtrack
"Let's Fall In Love" - Chris Botti - When I Fall In Love
"Don't Go (Giving Your Love Away)" -  Sonia Dada - My Secret Life
    "Stravinsky-Firebird Suite"  - Eiji Oue/Minnesota Orchestra  - Showcase CD

Yes, attachment problems persist. I don't know how they broke, since a clean install of the forum software works fine. I think among the upgrades something broke the system. It still irks me.

In defense of the TSA, they were all nice (I even had a long conversation with one employee named Dan who told me horror TSA stories and that I'd be ok.

As far as the "don't worry about cabs" I'm always building and rarely considering "keeping" the speaker I built that I passed off was another matter (Kozo) but mostly I'm always exploring so I don't look beyond the transitory: what did I learn from this? fwiw.

  • Many thanks to Jason, Bryan, and JR for putting on another great event.  The amount of time, energy, and money that they donate each year to the DIY cause is simply incredible.

I did not get a chance to hear every speaker, but the sonic highlights for me were the Travelers, S.O.T.U.S, Novice, Zangers, Honeycombs, and SST's.  I agree with Shawn about the Travelers (Curt C & Jim H).  Incredibly detailed top end and smooth transition to SB15CAC.  I need to get a pair of those OW2 tweeters!

I was very impressed, also, by the SOTUS (Todd E.) speakers.  The TL tweeters have an airy quality that is hard to match.  The sealed upper woofer and vented lower woofer sounded very good.

Also impressive were Brad's Novice speakers.  I have a pair of Neo3's, but they have never sounded this good in my systems.  They blended well with his hand-build 8" woofers.

The Ying & Yang sounded much improved over Indy and sounded even better once the subwoofer level was dialed in properly.  Other standouts were for me were Scotts HiVI DIY 3.1, Craig's Zangers, Nick's Honeycombs, Marvin's SST's, Curt's AviaTrix and Ani's Autumn Vibes.  So many good sounding speakers this year.

Good discussion about setting BSC levels with Ani.  Ani, please discount my comments about the bass.  I am biased in favor of applying the full 6dB of BSC, which is not what you are doing with your speakers (ie., don't listen to me).  Also, I was sitting in the 2nd row, which made all speakers sound a little bright.  I noticed that when I moved back to the 3rd row, the tonal balance shifted significantly.

Also enjoyed JR's high SPL test on his yellow woofers.  I agree with Matt, well broken in at this point.  In the future, I'd like to capture these demos using a "selective blur" still photography technique. It requires a tripod, low iso (50 or 100), small f stop (f16 or so), and a slow shutter speed ( 2 to 3 seconds).  This creates the effect of blurring the cone movement while the speaker cabinet & tweeter remain in sharp focus.

The room:  It was incredible how the tonal balance changed as you moved about the room.  Very bright in the first two rows,  a mellow, smooth type tonal balance in the middle rows, and somewhat dark sounding toward the back. This is probably typical of most larger rooms.  I kept switching back and forth from the 2nd row to the 3rd row seat right behind it and I was amazed at how the tonal balance shifted on the same track and set of speakers.  A little bright and edgy in the 2nd row, but a much better tonal balance in the 3rd row.  And I was only moving back about 3 feet!

Door prizes:  Really great set of door prizes this year.  A pair of TL Labs N26MG-A tweeters (nedlab.com), a pair of Morel ST-1048 tweeters, a pair of Rival R176-P-08 seven inch woofers, a pair of Meniscus W6520R-6 woofers, etc., etc.  The list goes on and on.  Craig let out a huge, high SPL exclamation when he won the Morel tweeters.  I didn't have my SPL meter running, but that reaction had to be at least 105dB at one meter.  Congrats, Craig!

The food:  Thanks for the pizza, tasted great.  My outback steak was only so-so. I'd give it a 5.  I had the rib eye, medium.  I eat my steak without sauce, and there was a very distinctive aftertaste that I did not like.  Kind of like a natural gas flavoring, only different.   At the fish market, I had the trout.  I'd give this a 2.  It was very thin, almost no meat at all, with a pile of oatmeal chips sprinkled on top.  Had to be very careful when chewing because of all the small bones.

Other event highlights included the power outage and early morning (6:30am) fire alarm.  That burnt sausage aroma was still in the air when I checked out the following morning. Really stunk up the place. The power outage, however, was nice because it gave me the opportunity to experiment with dark background photography.  Got some good candle light style swap meet photos using handheld flashlights.

Look forward to attending again next year,

    Bill

  • Bryan,

I mailed the picture disc about an hour ago.   You should get it Fri or Sat.  There were 130 keepers and 3 panos.

I'll post a few here, just for fun.

    VERY IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ

I'm pissed off to report that my credit card info was stolen and I am almost 100% certain it happened at the Ankeny hotel over the weekend.

I caught the fraud quickly and I'm working with my bank to fix the problem. I won't be liable for any of the charges, but obviously ALL OF YOU who used a credit card at the hotel are potentially at risk, IMO.

In particular, I had a bar tab and my card was behind the reception desk for hours, so it would have been very easy for any clerk to copy the info. One particular employee who handled my card was fired because of the breakfast fire on Saturday morning. I didn't use my card anywhere else that weekend and the fraudulent charges are in the Des Moines area....so call me a conspiracy theorist, but I think our friendly neighborhood sausage buring hotel clerk might have conveniently stolen my info and since he was fired after the sausage incident, he's got a good reason to screw a few people.

I could be wrong, but I don't think I am. I would feel awful if this happened to anyone else, so please....if you gave up a credit card for a bar tab or for any length of time that would allow somebody to copy the info, I'd keep a close eye on the account activity....please.

  • Unfortunately a shitty crime by shitty people that happens to frequent these days. Glad you/your bank caught it.
  • That is shitty - I better check on things myself.
    I have a signature.
  • I'm clean.
    I have a signature.
  • If the culprit is local they probably got caught on camera while shopping. The hotel had lots of camera's so they may have video of the front desk.

  • I'm clean too.  Which is good news since I had to replace my card three weeks ago for a similar incident.
  • Bryan,

I'm really sorry to hear that. I like the venue for the location and most importantly, the room acoustics. It's the best room we've had in Iowa. All my opinion of course.

    Jim

  • Amanda is clean too. I'm sorry Bryan, shitty deal. Glad you are protected.

  • Uggg , sorry Bryan. After dealing with PCI compliancy about ten years ago ,this doesnt surprise me. Dealt with many a hotels that had their front desk , kitchen/bar AND guest network on the same network. It was a mess . Sounds like yours was a little different scenario though with the card being used. I hope the mess gets sorted out.
    greywarden
  • Ouch, that sucks. At least it got caught early. Glad you are protected.
  • Glad to hear nobody else was affected. I sent a bit of a scathing email to the hotel managers and they have not replied. I'm disappointed about that. I figured maybe we would get a comp for next year or some sort of apology - nothing yet. :(

For anyone who would like to download the lossless version of the house track - here it is. It's 24bit 96k and around 158mb. https://app.box.com/s/jbot57552k5bk1uthr1nzng39xithpzb

I know @jholtz wanted a copy. We'll have a permanent link to the mp3 version on the archive page, but if you want the good one, get it now.  I'll be deleting that file in a few weeks or so.

A longer (longer than the social media post) flyby of the room. I just want to stick my $0.02 here - the designs we see at Iowa run the gamut. There are naked first stage designs, world class entries, and everything in between. There are also phenomenal experimental projects submitted for everyone's perusal. Personally, I'm proud to be a part of it, despite not having an actual exhibit for several years now. I live vicariously through you all.
