Iowa 2018

Hi all,

Gonna need some help planning the 2018 Iowa DIY event this year.  I've already spoken to the folks at Grinnell College and both the Harris Theater and the JRC event spaces are booked solid for the month of October.  I didn't ask about the Harry Potter hall because frankly, that space was disastrous.  Before I go back to the college to ask about alternate spaces on campus, should we just explore other venues and move the show?

It would be awesome if an Iowa local has an event space resource, because it's not looking too good for Grinnell College this year.

Thoughts?

  • I don't live there anymore but Coralville has a nice art center that might be an option.

I haven't been but it does look nice from the photos I have seen.
  • How about a Chicagowa show instead

JR mentioned the room that Greg used back in 2014 for his active tower setup - I completely forgot about that space, but I sent an email to the Grinnell College event coordinator to see if it's available.  I think it would suit us.  It's this space:

As far as Chicago is concerned, IMO we should get Iowa done in Iowa this year and maybe consider a formal Chicago DIY in 2019.  Before we all know it, we're going to be carving Turkey and opening Christmas presents.

  • If we could get the 'across the hall' room and that 'lounge' space where we did the measuring all those years ago - it would be perfect!

The one with the sunken pit area?  I remember Dennis doing measurements in there.  Is there an area to set up chairs?
  • If you are willing to come further East, there might be a number of options in Cedar Rapids. There's the usual hotel ballrooms that can be sectioned off. Kirkwood Community College has a very nice upscale hotel (hospitality teaching facility) with meeting rooms of various sizes. The food there is very good! The Tippie Business room might about the right size.

I really liked that smaller room that Greg used.   Seemed to have a very good acoustic and would probably sound much closer to how a person's stereo would sound at home.  Like the smaller Dakota venue.  I like this idea.

    That looks good!
  • I liked the room in Grinnell. I'd be surprised if they didn't have other spaces that would be adequate.

  • That KCC room looks great. Its spaced out enough to not have everyones body breaking up the output!
  • I'm ok with Cedar Rapids.
    I have a signature.
  • Hopefully that room Greg demoed in is available, or there is another suitable room available at Grinnell.

If we have to move the show and make some new DIY IOWA traditions I'd be fine with Cedar Rapids.
  • One part of me feels it would be a shame to move it from Grinnell - it's kind of a tradition. That other room looks much bigger and probably has decent acoustics. But, just to be proactive, I'll call Kirkwood today and see what the cost and availability might be.
  • I feel like if we can't get the nice proper room at Grinnell whats the point of going there. The other room was not as big for us (based on Indiyana's showing) and it seems like every year its more and more difficult to get the nice room or at minimum grinnell college is perhaps hard to interact with. I don't mind going elsewhere. That said, i dont go to iowa too often so i shut shut my fat mouth.
  • Guys,

Des Moines area is always a good option for a centralized hub with lots of meeting rooms.

I'm not sure if I'll make it to Iowa DIY this year but I can do inquires about availability and cost if anyone is interested.

  • I just got off the phone with Kirkwood and the Tippie Business room is available on Oct. 13th and 20th. Cost is $200 + $21% gratuity. https://www.thehotelatkirkwood.com/site/index.php?p=36335

I'm sure not opposed to having it in Des Moines. I like a road trip now & then. Would that be too far for our friends in states East of Iowa?
  • Not too far for me.

FWIW, Des Moines is 45 minutes west of Grinnell on I-80 so it's not a killer drive. There are 100's of hotels, restaurants and bars plus a casino for those inclined.

I'm not promoting Des Moines, just clarifying what's available.

  • Iowa has been sort of a tradition for me. It's the first DIY I attended and have attended every year since.... Would definitely attend this year too. Any venue is good.

Completely agree Tom. Iowa was the first DIY that I attended back in '09 and became a fall tradition for me so there are definitely some good memories attached to the Harris Center.

I'm fine with any venue be it in Grinnell, Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, etc.

Iowa DIY doesn't HAVE to be in Iowa.  I've offered to investigate options here in the Appleton WI area for 2019 and would be happy to co-host with the MAC Daddys.
  • Double the drive, double the fun?
John H, btw forum has decided I don't get emails
  • But if we had it in Appleton, I would have to drive right through Madison. It would be way too tempting to make an expensive pit-stop.

I'm down for Appleton in 2019!  For 2018, all the possible locations mentioned so far sound good to me.

    True dat.

I'll echo Bill. Down for Appleton in 2019, any of the 2018 venues mentioned sound great.

What's the saying, "Host it and they will come."? ;) :p B)

  • All good suggestions.  I'll help as I can -  I hope to be in a better position to host in a few years.
Keep an open mind, but don't let your brain fall out.

  • Well it looks like Grinnell is out for this year.  I was told that room off of the main hall can't be used because it shares a wall with a dorm facility.

Sooooooo, I have an email out to the folks in Cedar Rapids.

Question: Should we look into renting that Tippie Business room for both days Oct 19 & 20? We could have an informal get together on Friday afternoon/eve and then the formal event on Saturday.

  • I definitely would show up earlier on Friday and chip in extra money to have a good room for Friday afternoon/evening/night.

Same here.  Cedar Rapids is a nice town and I won't have to figure out that stupid bypass!
